Chapter 1: Burial Mounds

Jiang Cheng was angry as he was going up the mountain, he left the disciples behind as he didn't want to risk anybody. He looked at the barrier Wei Wuxian put up and hit it with Zidian, broke it. As he climbed, he heard voices of people and thought "there are living people here?" then he saw Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing having an argument about potatoes and radishes. He sighed, people stopped working, Wei Wuxian smiled and approached him:

"Jiang Cheng, you are here in time. Tell me which is better to plant; radishes or potatoes?"

Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes and looked at him:

"What are you doing here, can you even eat those crops?"

Wei Wuxian looked at him, there was pain in his eyes and he said:

"You can eat anything when you are hungry, I have lived here for three months."

Jiang Cheng was a bit shocked to receive it, he teasingly said:

"Really?"

Wei Wuxian nodded. Jiang Cheng knew that his senior brother Wei Wuxian wasn't lying to him, this was his serious face, so he thought "those Wen people were right then, they indeed threw him here, but how on earth did Wei Wuxian survive here?"

Wei Wuxian poked him and Jiang Cheng asked:

"Where is Wen Ning?"

As he asked this question a child hugged Jiang Cheng's leg tightly, he looked at the kid and shouted a bit:

"Get off!"

Wei Wuxian looked at Jiang Cheng a bit angrily:

"Hey, he is just a kid! A-Yuan, don't eat the soil."

He then immediately took A-Yuan's hand out of his mouth and dusted him off:

"Where is Grandma, go play with her."

A-Yuan ran to Grandma, Jiang Cheng sighed as Wei Wuxian lead him to the cave where Wen Ning was sleeping. Jiang Cheng looked at Wen Ning:

"What happened to him?"

Wei Wuxian:

"He was almost dead, I wanted to take revenge from those guards because they killed his people, I didn't expect him to turn out like this. Wen Ning keeps his emotions deep down. All his anxiety, anger, sorrow... So he became vicious until I shouted Qionglin at him then he lost his consciousness, so now I am trying to awaken his mind."

Jiang Cheng was angry and he shouted:

"Is he even a human?"

As he was unsheathing Sandu, Wei Wuxian blocked him with Chenqing and shouted:

"What on earth are you doing?"

Just as Jiang Cheng was going to speak, Wen Qing entered:

"What are you two doing here?"

Wei Wuxian replied:

"Don't worry, I am here."

Wen Qing nodded and left. Jiang Cheng unleashed Zidian only to notice that the barrier was so strong that even Zidian couldn't break it, he angrily asked:

"What on earth is this barrier?"

Wei Wuxian looked at him with shock and replied:

"This is the Shield of Yunmeng Jiang Sect it is called Lotus Barrier."

Jiang Cheng was shocked:

"Impossible, how did you learn to make it, even I don't know it."

Wei Wuxian looked at him:

"Remember when Madam Yu punished me before we went to Gusu to study? I was punished because she caught me reading the book about protective shields, luckily I had enough time to learn this secret. All those three months here, this shield helped me a lot."

Jiang Cheng sighed and asked:

"Are you planning to live like this? Trying to become some patriarch?"

Wei Wuxian looked at him:

"Did you forget who gave us the remains buried in the Ancestral Hall? Did you forget who kept us safe while we were on the run? Is this how you repay Jiang Wanyin?!"

Jiang Cheng looked at Wei Wuxian with tears in his eyes:

"Yes, true, but now the tables have turned! Can't you see it Wei Wuxian, I can't protect you if you protect them. Those leaders, when you are on their side, you are an untamed hero, but the moment you stand against them you are a lunatic."

Wei Wuxian looked at him:

"Then abandon me. If you cannot protect, abandon me."

Jiang Cheng looked at him:

"Would you die if you stopped being a hero Wei Wuxian?! Can't you see that even if you are right, you are wrong in their eyes!"

Wei Wuxian looked at him:

"Exactly. I am wrong in their eyes even if I am right. I owe to these people, you owe them too. Tell that I rebelled against the world, that I defected from Yunmeng Jiang Sect, that from now on I Wei Wuxian have nothing to with Yunmeng Jiang Sect."

Jiang Cheng:

"Then fight me Wei Wuxian."

Wei Wuxian nodded. Jiang Cheng wiped his tears, took a deep breath and then started going down the mountain, he thought "dad was right, you understand our family motto better than any of us, you act on it better than any of us, you are even better than some of the sect leaders, damn you Wei Wuxian, why do you have to be like this?"
