Instincts: A Roven Story

Chapter 4: Heartbreak

When I awoke I was in my own bed and Raven was nowhere to be seen. Maybe it was all a dream of my own. I felt somewhat empty but I pushed it off to our not having as many missions since Slade's destruction and Jinx's defection. I could smell Starfire's cooking. It was intoxicating. I found myself longing for more of Raven's pancakes. Come to think of it I don't recall her eating anything yesterday after I took her breakfast. Does she even need to eat? Of course she does! She's half human after all. Then again so is Cyborg.. Does he need to eat? I found all these thoughts running through my head as I curled up in my own little cocoon of covers. Thankfully I was ripped out of my head by a knock on the door.

"Robin!" I heard Starfire yell from the other side. "Come eat the breakfast! I have made-"

I cut her off. "Coming Star!"

I could practically see her pouting through the thick metal door. She loves to announce her crazy Tamarean foods. I crawled from my nest to my wardrobe. Seeing my closet filled with my uniform, I searched for some normal clothes. Today I felt like being Richard 'Dick' Grayson. Not Robin Boy Wonder.

I walked out of my room in a basic black t-shirt and some blue jeans. I still wore my mask. After all in another city Dick Grayson was known and if someone saw him with the Titans my identity would be out.

"Robin? Woah dude what happened?" BeastBoy stared at me.

"Just wanted a change that's all." I looked around at Cyborg and Starfire's matching stunned expressions.

"You look- You look very beautiful Robin. Very beautiful." Star gave me a smile.

I smiled back. That's when I realized someone was missing. "Raven sleeping in?" I asked them.

"Behind you." I heard her cold voice causing me to whirl around. What I saw stunned me. It looks like Raven wanted a change herself. She stood in a pair of dark skinny jeans a black top and some boots. Instead of her normal cloak she had on a midnight blue jacket.

"Woah woah woah. Where you going all fancy?" Raven rolled her eyes at BeastBoy's smirk.

"Nowhere. Jinx picked this out for me. I promised I'd wear it once." She shrugged.

Starfire had what looked to be a jealous hateful glare on her face when my eyes cast over her. It caused me to do a double take but when I did there was nothing. I put it down to my imagination.

"So Star. You made breakfast?" I turned fully to her.

Her eyes lit up. "Yes! I made pancakes! Since you like them so much."

Once again I saw her eyes narrow in Raven's direction. Is it possible she's mad I ate Raven's breakfast instead of hers yesterday? No. Star knows she's my girlfriend. Raven is more of a little sister. In a way. Kind of. Not really. I have got to quit thinking. I shook my head to clear the thoughts just to see Starfire handing me a plate of what I'm guessing are supposed to be pancakes. Somehow they seemed both burnt and undercooked and had an unrecognizable 'fruit' in them.

"Thanks Star." I took a bite and tried to hide my gag. These definitely aren't pancakes.

Raven smiled? "Is there enough for me?" She asked Star who nodded happily.

Raven sat down a seat away from me and began eating the disgusting food without any problem. How is she doing that? I can feel the one bite I've had crawling up my throat.

"Robin. Why aren't you eating?" I heard the hurt in Star's voice. "Raven likes my food. Why do you not?"

I bit my lip summoning the courage to eat this enemy to my digestive system. Soon my plate was clean and Star was thrilled.

"I knew you'd like it!" She threw her arms around me.

I was enjoying her embrace when I heard Raven's phone buzz.

"Ooh who texted?" Cyborg teased her.

She bit her lip. "It's not of your concern. If you'll excuse me." She got up to leave when Star stopped her.

"Are you going to leave us for Jinx again? I was hoping you would spend the day with me at the mall? I want to look pretty like you." My heart broke at Star's words. Raven's apparently did too.

"Hold on Star." She began typing something. In a moment there was another beep.

"How would you.." She exhaled slowly. "How would you and Robin like to join my date and I? Make it a double date.." I stood shocked. She's going on a date? And agreeing to make it a double date? Raven wouldn't meet my eyes.

"Oh yes! Where are we going?" Starfire's eyes lit up.

"Just this amusement park. We'll be gone all day. Come on Drew will here in a minute." Raven began walking towards the elevator. Star dragged me after her.

Outside the was a nice black mustang. Drew stood in his usual attire leaning back on it. I saw him smile when he saw Raven. He took her hand and walked her to the passenger door opening it for her. Star and I climbed in the back.

"So are you looking forward to the park?" I asked Star.

"Oh yes! The funhouse is my favorite." She responded her voice cheery.

"The funhouse sucks." I heard Raven mumble.

"Life sucks." Drew turned and smiled at her.

"Oh gothic love. It is so sweet. Don't you think Robin?" Starfire turned to me.

"I think your sweet." I heard Raven gag at my words.

Soon we were at the Park. After trying all of the rides, some twice, and playing most of the games, we walked to the nice little restaurant they had. After being led to our table Drew pulled Raven's chair out for her. Star looked at me expectantly. I quickly made it seem like I was just as gentlemanly.

The night passed slowly. I knew I was being distant but I couldn't help it. Seeing that goth guy steal Raven away distracted me. Raven and I had been through a lot together. She's my best friend. It's hypocritical but I don't want her hanging out with anyone but me.

"Robin?" Star waved a hand in front of my face.

"Huh? What?" I snapped back to reality.

She laughed. "Oh Robin. I do love you."

*Sitting across from Robin*

I froze at her words. She could never love him like I do.

"I love you too Star." Robin gave her a grin. I felt my breath hitch. It felt as if someone had stabbed me in the chest. I found myself choking on my food.

"Raven? Are you alright?" Drew placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Fine." I coughed. "I'm fine." I tried to force a smile.

Robin and Starfire didn't notice my predicament. They were too busy making out. And that's when it happened. That's when the knife that had been plunged into my chest was yanked out. My heart along with it. Numbness flooded my body.

"So this is what it feels like to have your heart broken.." I muttered not loud enough for anyone to hear.
