GOODBYE KISS: lingering and hard for long times apart. It curves one's body against the other's, with hands against backs.
Steve took the envelope from Bucky's hand, sitting on their bed. It had already been opened. Steve took out the letter and looked at Bucky. He was standing in front of Steve, leaned against the dresser, with his hands in his pockets.
"What is this?" Steve asked, knowing damn well what it was.
The letter had the giant logo of the US Army printed on the top of it. And that could mean only one thing.
Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes, it stated.
"You're leaving. Again" Steve stated with a blank expression.
Bucky slightly nodded, looking at his feet.
"When? When are you leaving?"
Steve knew that he could find his answer in the letter, but he didn't want to look at it even for one more second.
"Two days" Bucky whispered.
Steve finally looked at Bucky, breathed out loudly and let himself fall on his back on the bed. He put his hands through his hair and then massaged his temples. It was late when Bucky joined Steve in bed. He didn't want to face Steve while he was still awake. Sure, Steve knew about Bucky's involvement with the military and he understood that he couldn't just refuse service to his country. But they had been through deployment before, twice while they were dating and then again during their engagement. They didn't discuss it, but none of them expected him to be called again. They didn't want to believe that Bucky would leave again, that something that big could ever come between them once more.
Bucky knew that Steve would not be fine with that, who would be. He laid in bed next to his husband, being careful not to wake him up. But Steve was not asleep. He was wide awake and he couldn't sleep, as much as he tried to.
"Hey" Steve whispered when he felt the mattress moving under him.
"Did I wake you?"
"No- Steve shook his head- couldn't sleep"
Steve rolled over, giving his back to Bucky, facing the door.
"Is it because of...?"
"Yes" Steve whispered softly.
Bucky hugged Steve from behind, making him the little spoon.
"I'm sorry" Bucky mumbled in Steve's neck.
"When America calls, you run, I get it"
Bucky chuckled, lightly.
"How long?"
"I don't- I don't know how long"
Steve nodded, mumbling a little 'ok'.
"Are we fine, right?" Bucky asked, worried.
Steve took Bucky's hands, placing a little kiss on them.
"Yes, we're totally fine"Steve pulled up in front of the military airport. They were early, but it didn't matter. Steve turned off the car, looking in front of him and putting his hand on the gear change. He could feel his eyes filling up with tears, but he didn't want Bucky to know so he just avoided blinking. Bucky noticed. he knew his husband better than anybody else in the world. He put a hand on Steve's on the change, waiting to see his muscles relaxing a bit.
"You ok?"
Steve nodded, sniffing, trying to push back the tears.
"It's ok, baby. Everything it's going to be just fine"
Steve quickly nodded as a tear fell on his cheek. Bucky wanted to cry too, but he had to be there for Steve, to make him believe that everything was going to be ok.
"It's ok if you cry, sugar"
Steve bushed away a tear, just before another one fell on the other cheek.
"We can stay here until you're ready"
When finally Steve got his act together, he jumped out of the car, opening the trunk to pull out Bucky's bag.
Bucky followed him shortly after, closing the trunk after Steve put the bag on the floor.
"Can you please look at me?" Bucky asked.
Steve finally turned his head towards Bucky, looking down at him.
"You sure you're ok with this?"
Steve nodded, taking Bucky's hands.
"I'm not ok, but I'll be, I promise"
Bucky threw himself at Steve, wrapping his arms around Steve's waist. Steve pushed Bucky's head closer to his chest, stroking his short hair.
Bucky threw his arms around Steve's chest, snuggling his face in his neck.
Bucky slowly pulled away, putting his hand on Steve's cheeks, while he held him by the waist.
Bucky pulled Steve down, meeting him in the middle, pressing their lips together. Steve pulled Bucky's body closer while Bucky caressed his neck.
They kissed for what seemed like hours, but it had to make up for all the months to come when they'll be apart.
When they parted, Bucky put his forehead on Steve's chest, while Steve rested his chin on Bucky's head.
"I'm gonna go now, sugar. I want you to go back in the car before I walk away, and definitely don't look back, ok?"
Steve brushed away a tear, pushing Bucky away to look him in the eyes.
"I'll miss you, Buck"
"I'll miss you too, baby. Now go, please"
Steve pecked a little kiss on Bucky's lips.
"Just come back to me"
Bucky took a step back.
"I will, baby"
Steve squeezed his hand before turning away and walking to the car. He sat in his seat, started the ignition and slowly drove away. From the rearview mirror, he could see Bucky waving at him before he turned and walked towards the door of the airport.
As Bucky was out of Steve's visual range, he stopped the car, letting his head fall on the wheel, letting go of the loud sobs he had been keeping inside. Then, he drove away, not bothered by the tears on his face.
