POST BREAK-UP KISS: the kiss that catches both of you off guard, but says I miss you, I'm sorry and please love me again all at once without any words being spoken.
Steve tucked his cap on his head and looked behind his shoulder before crossing the street. He rang the bell of Tony's penthouse and put his hands in the pockets of his sweatshirt, hoping that Tony would let him in.
Tony had every reason to shut him out of his life forever if he wanted to. And Steve couldn't exactly blame him for it. What he did was...bad and unforgivable.
The door opened and Steve walked in, caught the elevator and reached the last floor. Tony's door was half-open. Steve breathed in and walked inside. The house was smelling of Tony's cologne. He hadn't been home for a very long time but everything was just the same as it was when he left. The living room was empty but Steve knew that Tony was in his lab. He slowly walked down the stairs, trying to stall the inevitable meeting. He wanted to see Tony, he had missed him but he didn't want to know what could come out of it.
Steve leaned against the open glass door or the lab, looking at Tony working on his holographic table. Steve could see the special light Tony used to have in his eyes when he was inventing and smiled thinking of every time he looked at Tony working. It had been months since the last time they saw each other and lots of things changed but the feeling in Steve's guts as he saw Tony wasn't one of it.
"I saw you there, Rogers. You can come in"
Steve scoffed and walked towards Tony, sitting on the other side of the table.
"Hi" Steve softly whispered.
Tony looked up, taking a sip of whiskey, just to look back down shortly after.
Steve leaned on the table, putting a hand on Tony's but he moved it right after.
"Tones..."
"Don't- Tony finally managed to look at Steve- please, don't Tones me"
Steve could have sworn he saw a small tear rolling down Tony's cheek.
"Tony-"
"Say what you came to say and leave, please"
Steve rolled the chair closer to Tony's and put a hand on Tony's forearm.
"Tony please, look at me"
Tony let go of his pen and turned his chair towards Steve.
"Here, I'm looking at you, happy now?" Tony said, scoffing, but not moving Steve's hand from his arm.
"I- Steve loudly breathed out I'm sorry Tony. Words cannot express how sorry I am"
Tony just looked at him.
"What I did was... stupid"
"Stupid doesn't begin to describe what you did"
Steve moved his hand closer to Tony's, who let him do that without flinching.
"I shouldn't have done it, I'm so sorry"
"Damn right you shouldn't. If you had told me, we...we could have sorted it out"
Steve felt tears forming in his eyes.
"I get it, y'know? I get why you choose Barnes and I'm not holding that against you. What I don't get is why you lied to me. I've always been by your side and I would have backed you up, you know I would have, Steve, but-"
A tear fell on Tony's cheek and he brushed it away with the back of his free hand.
"I was your boyfriend, I loved you. It was supposed to be us against the world Steve"
Steve squeezed Tony's hand as a tear fell from his eye.
"W-why the past tense? You don't love me anymore?"
"Steve..." Tony whispered, putting his other hand over Steve's "I-I love, I'll always love you-"
"But...?"
Tony breathed in.
"I can't do this Seve. You broke my trust and all of my love for you, no yours for me, can't fix that. I'm sorry Steve"
Steve shook his head.
"I'm so, incredibly sorry, Tony"
"I know, I know but I can't. I can't keep hurting because of you"
Steve stood up.
"I got to go" he whispered.
Tony jumped up, grabbing Steve by his wrist.
"Steve, wait"
Steve stopped, turning towards the shorter man, who threw himself at Steve, who stood awkwardly while Tony buried his face in Steve's chest until he finally wrapped his arms around Tony.
Tony finally pulled his face up, looking at Steve with his eyes full of tears.
Steve caressed Tony's cheek bushing away a tear with his thumb and completely ignoring the tears rolling down his own face. He brushed Tony's red lips before meeting them with his.
That kiss felt like a breath of fresh air, a relief, like something he was dying to do for a long time. It was soft and slow, their lips dancing together at a beautiful rhythm. Steve's hands were eagerly holding Tony's waist as if he feared he would run away and Tony's were tangled in Steve's now long hair, keeping their faces together.
It said everything that was left unspoken between them, all the I love yous they didn't say, the I miss yous they couldn't say. It was Steve asking Tony to forgive him, to please love him again, to never let him go. It was Tony's last breath of air before tucking his head back in the oppressing ocean that was the world without Steve.
Tony pulled away, heavily breathing, putting their foreheads together. They were so close but it was still too far apart. Tony put his arm over Steve's, holding them firmly, either pushing away or pulling closer.
Tony bit his lip, his eyes filling with tears.
"No, Tony, please" Steve begged with a broken voice.
"I-I can't Steve, I'm sorry" he whispered back.
"Tony..."
Tony pushed back the tears as he took his eyes away from Steve's.
"I have to go- Tony let go of Steve's arms, pushing himself away- Turn the lights off when you go"
Steve let go of Tony's waist, looking at him walk out of the lab as tears fell on his face.
"I love you" he softly whispered.
