Chapter 13
BEFORE
"Where are we going again?" I ask for the millionth time this journey.
"I told you, it's an old cabin up north that my parents, your grandparents and I used to go to every half term, Easter and whatever holiday we got. It's a beautiful place and peaceful. You'll love it"
"So really you're just saying that mum doesn't know it exists?"
"That too" dad gives me a small smile and looks at the road again.
We've been on the road for an hour so far and my butts starting to hurt and I'm still feeling a little light headed from the plane flight but the view distracts me. At first after leaving the airport, we were out on a motorway for ten minutes and after dad made a sudden turn, we were on small, thin, bumpy tracks. Despite the soft bouncing, I was comfortable just looking out my window at the astonishing forest that, from the thickness of the tress, looked infinite.
As I slowly drift off and the music from the radio starts to fade out, the engine stops and dad announces we're here.
I get out the car carelessly only to be stopped in my tracks by the sight of the beautiful cabin in front of me. Its smooth, dark wood is flawless and covered in intricate designs and nothing like I'd thought it'd be.
"Come on, let's go in". I sense rather than see dad behind me and walk towards the heavenly building. I take my time, running my fingers up the smooth banister as I walk up the stairs and lightly push the front door open. The inside definitely doesn't disappoint. The ceilings are lined with cinder and there are pillars around instead of walls giving an open, homey feeling.
"Wow". Is all I think to say and dad chuckles.
"Yep, wow. Now go in upstairs and turn right. Your rooms the one at the end." I thank him awkwardly and climb the stairs two at a time. I'm so giddy it's ridiculous considering the situation. Especially because of the situation. Nonetheless I open the door to my temporary bedroom and smile. It's big, bigger than my room at home and it's simple but sweet. Wait... What is that? My smile drops and I frown as I look at it. It's a photo of mum and I. Well, baby me obviously. This room must have been dads.
I laugh as I see a picture stuck on the wall of dad and some other guys around his age with their mohawks and terrible 80s clothing. They're wearing these cringy glittery trousers covered in sequins that go right to the floor with matching t shirts wearing the logo 'bad bois'. Seriously?
"We used to be a rock band. We used to think we were pretty punk rock with our gelled up hair and disgusting trousers. We tried to pursue a serious career but with our voices, we were definitely going nowhere. But it was a good laugh I guess". I choke on my laugh and turn around to find dad leaning on the doorway with a big grin planted on his face. Oops.
"Sorry, I didn't realise you were there. It was just..."
"We looked like complete idiots?" I nod and we both laugh for a good minute before he excuses himself and I'm left lying on my bed with tears on my face.
ROB
She skips up the steps skipping one each time and I can't help but smile at her childish excitement. The room I sent her to is my old one and its full of great memories of me with my parents and long days outside in the Scottish frost.
Oh crap.
That's my old room... With my old stuff...
I blush a deep purple remembering the stuff in there. I quietly creep up the stairs just as she walks in.
