BEFORE
Wow. The sun shining in through the windows looks stunning and the intense brightness isn't even blinding, just humbling. Today really is a beautiful day.
"Emma!" My Dad's voice startles me a bit before the last night's events run through my mind. A lot happened in that one day but I have a feeling nothing's gonna change.
"Coming!" Great (!). My whole life's changed yet it hasn't. Still can't even have a decent lie-in without being woken up at 7 in the morning. Yey.
I drag my legs as I walk to the bathroom and take as long as I can to brush my teeth, enjoying the peace and quiet.
"Morning, sunshine", my Dad's kind sentiment still unfamiliar, I just give him a little smile. I know I should try harder but I'm just too tired.
"How did you sleep?" I guess he wants me to make conversation then.
"Not bad, considering. And you? I see Andy dumped you with the couch." We both laugh a bit and he looks at me oddly.
"Yeah, it wasn't too bad!" His chuckle is so sweet. "Anyway, I think you should sit down, little lady, I've got some big news on what our next move is." He taps the seat of the chair next to him.
Little lady seriously? At least he's trying, I guess.
"Uh, sure". I sit down next to Dad and get ready for more news.
ROB
After explaining why we're moving and assuring her we wouldn't get caught with fake passports, Emma's all outta questions and is peacefully eating her pancakes.
"These are delicious!" We look at each other and smile over our food, a moment I never want to lose and one I'll never forget. Life is all about the small things after all.
As she looks back down and chews on her food, I think about all the years lost and how different she looks but how when I look into her eyes, that 3-year-old lively, loving girl is still there looking back at me. Maybe that's the problem, I'm not seeing this Emma for who she really is and how she's grown. But I know in our oncoming mission, she'll grow more than in all the years I missed and it'll all be right before my eyes.
Only I know it'll be snatched away just as fast and I'm not sure I'll be able to stop it when it happens.
