Ultimatum

You wake up still encased in Loki's arms. You smile and sink deeper into them. They're cold - of course - but you don't mind. They're a nice break from the amount of energy everyone else has. As you're about to drift off back to sleep, you feel a surge of energy somewhere off in the distance, there's a bang, and the building rumbles. Loki's arms unconsciously wrap tighter around you. You kick him, trying to be gentle but fear makes the kick a little too aggressive. 'Loki. Loki wake up.' You sit up, clutching the duvet around you to cover up. 'What the hell was that?'

'What was what, love? Come back to bed.' He lays back down, shutting his eyes again. Another bang forces them to fly open and he sits bolt upright with you. 'Ok. I heard that.'

You scramble out of bed and grab a pair of joggers and a jumper, then head to the kitchen, where the others are already gathered, Loki close behind you. 'What's going on?' They were stood in a tight circle, talking in frantic whispers, but disband when the two of you show up.

Thor's the first to speak. 'It's the Chitauri. They're back, and they've brought Thanos.' Between the sombre look on everyone's faces; the way Loki puts his hand round your waist, despite there being others around; and how Thor says Thanos, you know he's not someone you want on Earth. You cross your arms tightly across your chest and lean in to Loki, where you feel safer.

'I'm going to regret asking this... but who's Thanos?'

'He wants to wipe out half the universe. He thinks it will 'restore balance',' Nat says. You can tell she's scared from the way her voice is quieter and huskier than usual, trying to keep it together for the others.

'How does he expect to do that?'

'He wants to gather the infinity stones,' Thor says. You give him a blank look, so he explains. 'The infinity stones are 6 stones of incredible power, each controlling an essential element of the universe. Reality, Mind, Soul, Time, Space, Power. Rumour is that he's only missing two: Space and Power.'

'Then what are we waiting for? Let's go kill this son of a bitch before he kills us.' Everybody nods and you rush back to your room to get changed into your suit. Loki joins you.

Whilst in the wardrobe, gathering your stuff, you feel Loki hovering behind you, not changing. You turn around and frown at him. Your silence encourages him to speak. 'We don't have to go, y/n.' His face looks almost desperate, like he's trying to reason with you.

You stop what you're doing, suit half on, and stare at him. 'What are you talking about? Of course we have to.'

'No. We don't have to help everyone and risk our lives for a world that doesn't even care about us, much less like us. Let's just get out of here whilst we still can.'

He's begging, you think to yourself. Why?

'Loki. As much as I'd like for it to be just you and me, that's not an option. Thanos wants to wipe out half the universe, right? Think about it. Where does that leave us? Oh, that's right, one alone and one dead.' His face drops, and you abandon your harsh tone and move closer, mildly aware you're only in your bra on your top half. 'We'll be ok. You don't need to worry. We'll be ok.' He nods into your palm and kisses your hand.

'Ok.' Upon him saying this, you dress fully and head back out with him.

It's not long till you and the rest of the team are at the epicentre of the fight. As you look around at everybody fighting, you start to panic. All around you, your friends are being beaten up, there are Chitauri appearing out of nowhere, and despite all the noise, you can hear the blood pumping in your ears. More than that, though, the energy in this place is overloading your senses, like a wasp buzzing in your ear. You can't fight like this.

You've been practicing something in training with Wanda and Pete, and maybe the battlefield isn't the best place to trial it, but it's worth a shot. With a deep breath out, you shut your eyes.

From your left, Loki asks a little panicked, 'Y/n, what are you doing?' Instead of replying, you hold a finger up in his direction, shushing him. With the loss of your sight, everything's slightly less chaotic. The wasp buzzing in your ear tunes down to a mosquito off in the distance. In your mind, you use the energy signals around you to map out everything that's happening. It's still daunting, not having your sight, but you just need a bit of confidence, and it'll work. It has to.

You start running towards where there's the most energy. 'Y/n, what the hell are you doing!' Loki protests. You feel him start to run after you, but he stops when you send out targeted bursts of energy towards the Chitauri, hitting them dead centre. It's working for a while, you drop at least 30 of them, until you feel an immense amount of energy from one source, part of them having a similar energy signature to your own. You can't help but open your eyes.

In front of you is a tall (around 8'), well built... thing. He certainly wasn't human. You're shocked at the sight of him, immense and intimidating. Thanos. Swinging around him: Peter. He looks so small and vulnerable next to this giant, and every time he gets closer you flinch, scared of what'll happen to him. You're aware Peter can bench press 25 cars at once, but that's hard to remember when he's being beaten up by the largest being you've ever seen, after the Hulk. You can't help yourself.

'Hey!' Thanos stops trying to grab Peter and looks at you. You charge the air up around you to intimidate him. 'Leave him alone.'

'Now you're what I've been looking for,' He states. You stop. What an odd response. You weren't expecting that.

You lean forward, struggling to hide your confusion. 'I beg your pardon?'

As Peter swings past him to kick him in the jaw, Thanos reaches out and grabs him by the neck effortlessly, slamming him into the ground. Instinctively, you jerk forward to help, but he interrupts you with a hand. 'Try anything, I snap the insect's neck.'

Quietly, from where Peter is on the ground, you hear a weak, 'Arachnid.'

You roll your eyes. 'What do you want?'

'You're going to come with me. Peacefully.' By now, most of the Chitauri have been dealt with and everybody's watching your exchange, Tony itching to help Peter. You look to Loki for support, and he just shakes his head at you, pleading. Don't, He mouths. But Peter's legs are desperately kicking out in attempt to flee Thanos' grip and back to air, and you can't let him get hurt.

You mouth, sorry, back to Loki and turn back around to Thanos, dissipating the excess energy around you. 'Alright. That's enough. Let him go.'
