Stiles is talking animatedly on the phone with Scott. "Yeah, yeah, I'll be there soon. Just gotta get my stuff."
He hunts down his shoes underneath the coffee table and sits down to put them on, putting the phone on speaker on the table. Scott warbles happily about the new video game he's bought and that Stiles really wants to try out. With his shoes done, he looks around for his hoodie. From his spot at the dinner table Derek points over his shoulder towards the turning staircase where the item of clothing is hanging by the hood from one of the stairs. Stiles mouths a thanks at the werewolf and scoops his phone up from the coffee table, putting it to his ear again.
He should've done that differently, because putting his arms in the sleeves while also holding the phone between his ear and his shoulder is starting to look like a particularly bad circus act. He can see Derek laughing at him, though he tries to hide it by pretending to be still reading the paper.
With his phone back on speaker and his hoodie finally on, Stiles sticks his tongue out at the werewolf and waves him goodbye, rushing out of the loft. "No, no, Scotty! Spoilers! Stop telling me about the secret passageway in that first level! I wanna be surprised by it!"
Stiles is halfway down the stairs when he realises he forgot something. "Wait, shit, forgot my car key." He jogs back up the stairs with Scott complaining that he'll forget his head if it wasn't attached, which is very much like the pot calling the kettle black.Derek is already waiting for him, still sitting at the table but now with a smirk on his face and the car key dangling from the hand that's resting on the back of the chair. Stiles suddenly remembers throwing them on the table, together with the mail he brought inside when he arrived here earlier today. He dashes over to Derek, closing his hand around the key and Derek's fingers and leaning in for a quick kiss. "Thanks, babe."
The kiss lands on the corner of Derek's mouth and if the werewolf looks surprised, it has nothing on the way Stiles reacts. He freezes, staring down at Derek with his hand still closed around the key - and Derek's fingers - and with the other hand still holding his phone.
"Stiles?" Scott asks over the phone. "What's wrong? I can hear your heartbeat going haywire from all the way over here." The strangled squeak that comes out of Stiles' throat is nothing but embarrassing. Scott lets out a large sigh. "You kissed him, didn't you?"
"I..." Stiles is waiting for the shock he feels at his thoughtless action to register with Derek too, yet the anger or rejection he is waiting for doesn't come. Instead, Derek is looking up at him with a soft, amused smile. He looks fond. "Uh..."
Derek uses his free hand to wrap around Stiles' waist and pull him into his lap. "You should sit down," he says, voice filled with quiet mirth, "you look like you're in shock."
Stiles stares at Derek's face, now only inches away from his own. Derek's arm feels heavy and firm around his lower back. "Why aren't you?" he manages to ask. "In shock, I mean."
There's a soft smile on Derek's face that Stiles doesn't see often. Or maybe he just has to pay more attention. "I was waiting for you to catch up."
"Catch up with what?"
"Us."
"Oh." His cheeks heat up embarrassingly, because Derek keeps looking at him in that incredibly fond way.
"Right," Scott coughs awkwardly, startling Stiles. He forgot he's still holding the phone, with the call with Scott still open. "I guess I'll be playing that game by myself then."
"No, nope!" Isaac suddenly calls out, thundering down the stairs. He's pulling his jacket on as he goes. "I'm not staying here listening to you two figuring things out. You guys are gross enough already without Stiles realising you're dating." The young werewolf catches the car key Derek tosses to him - Stiles' key. "I'm taking the Jeep. Bye! Scott, I'll be there in ten!"
"Oh!" Scott sounds a lot happier already. "Nice! See you soon!"
And then Stiles is left with the dial tone. Derek gently takes the phone from his hand and puts it behind them on the table. "Are you okay?"
Stiles looks up, searching for Derek's eyes and still finding that soft look there. Somehow, the look is not unfamiliar, though it has taken this long to really see it. He slowly realises Derek has been looking at him like this for a while now. And he knows he's been doing it himself too, when Derek wasn't looking. Or maybe even when he was, who knows?
"Are we dating?" he asks while Derek links his hands on Stiles' hip, holding him comfortably in the circle of his arms. The werewolf huffs a laugh. "Depends on who you're asking."
And Stiles quickly plays back through off hand comments from the pack in the past weeks, maybe even months. He knows a number of people who would answer that question with 'yes'. Hell, even his father would confirm it.
"I'm asking you.""I would like to," Derek answers warmly, tipping Stiles a bit more towards him so their faces are even closer. "If you want."
"Oh, I want," Stiles says between one breath and the next. He is rewarded with the sight of Derek's face lighting up like he just gave him the best gift ever. It's such a sight that Stiles doesn't have to think about wrapping his arms around his neck, bringing them closer still.
"Good." The word ghosts over his mouth, followed by Derek's lips. Kissing Derek Hale turns out to be quite the thing.
"We could have been doing this a lot sooner," Stiles argues playfully when they take a little break from kissing. He's still in Derek's lap and he has no plans to leave that spot any time soon. Isaac should maybe just stay with Scott for the night.
Derek nips at his nose. "I can't help it that you were so slow on the uptake."
"How could I know," Stiles says, planting little kisses along Derek's jaw, "that you were secretly dating me?"
"Your clothes are in the bottom drawer..."
Stiles's eyes flick towards the wardrobe dresser against the back wall. "... Of the dresser that I bought for you," he adds hesitantly. "And you left that drawer empty on purpose."
Derek catches his lips again. "For you," he says, kissing him warmly.
Stiles answers the kiss eagerly, deepening it before he suddenly rears back, gripping Derek by the shoulders. "You'd tell me if we were living together, right?"
The werewolf throws his head back in a laugh. "Yes Stiles, I'd tell you if you were moving in with me."
