"Almost all absurdity of conduct arises from the imitation of those whom we cannot resemble."
Samuel Johnson
*EDITED*"The Halbert family." Garcia says clicking her remote making pictures come up on the screen of the monitor. "They were murdered in their home last night in the Denver suburb of Cherry Creek."
"Isn't that like third home invasion in the last month?" I say flipping through the file.
"They kill everyone, parents, kids, pets if they have them." Rossi says.
"Always families, nice neighborhoods." Hotch says.
"What do they take?"
"Nothing they can't fit in their pockets cash, jewelry." Garcia says clicking the remote flashing more pictures of the crime.
"Hundreds of ways to get cash and jewels without killing entire families." I mumble.
"That's why home invasions are so hard to profile multiple motives." Hotch says.
"National statistics show an uptick in home invasions over the last few years,18% in Colorado." Spencer says.
"They want our help and they need it."
"The first 2 invasions were 20 days apart. This last one was just 9 days later." Garcia says.
"So they're killing in faster cycles, acquiring a taste." Morgan says. "And get this, crime is taken as emblematic of class and race. Home invasions typically involve the elderly and single females. The fact that entire families are being targeted suggests multiple unsubs."
"Could mean gang related, revenge motive, personal business." Emily says.
"Yeah, I don't think any of these victims are running in gang circles." JJ says
"Sewing circles, more like it, there's no graffiti, no messages, at least not visible ones. There's no rituals." Hotch says. "The aim was to start a race war. There's no proof of any hate crime here.
I look at the pictures on the monitor, "The parent murders are brutal, messy. The weapons vary, golf club, kitchen knife, iron." I say reading the list of weapons from the file.
"Household implements, symbols of family." JJ says, "But the kids were different. They died by injection, pentobarbital."
"That's a barbiturate sometimes used as an anticonvulsant for epileptics, or anxiety disorders." Spencer says, and I can feel him glancing at me.
"The invasions are well planned. Phone lines are cut. Ligature marks show the parents were bound and gagged." Rossi says.
"Look like these guys had some robbery experience.
And then found their true calling." Hotch says standing up. "Wheels up in 30."~
We arrive at the house a couple hours later and quickly join local police in the search around the crime scene, "No sign of forced entry." Rossi says examining the door.
"Same as the other 2 houses right?" I ask joining the rest of the rest of the team near the front door.
"Yeah." Spencer awkwardly mumbles. No one talks for a second, then JJ breaks the awkward tension no one knows the reason for, "So it's late, and the doorbell rings.""The victim comes over, and flips the switch." Morgan says reacting the crime.
"They had to make it dark.
No one would see anything if they're walking by." I say turning the lights back off."But I can still see through the peephole," Rossi says looking out of it.
"If you look like trouble, they might not let you in, but if you look nonthreatening, maybe they would open up." JJ suggests.
"So the occupants either knew them,or they lied their way in." Emily says.
"With this kind of overkill, there's usually history." Rossi says.
"If it was just about eliminating witnesses,it would never have been so vicious." Spencer says. "This is rage."
"You think they know the families?" Hotch says walking up to us.
"It's possible." Morgan says then we walk throughout the house up to the children's bedroom.
"And then there's the kids tucked in, quiet, orderly, controlled." Rossi says, being the first to walk into the bedroom.
"Speaks to an introvert with some capacity for remorse.
Have these chairs been moved?" Hotch asks a local police man who was also in the room."No. It's all how we found it."
"So they've been positioned to face the area where the parents were killed." Morgan says going to sit in one of the oddly placed chairs.
"Everything's been cleared out like a stage. It's entertainment." I say joining him.
"They sit and watch the parents die?"
"Maybe."
"Well guys it's pretty late," Hotch says locking at his watch. "Go get sleep be at the station at 9 sharp." He says grabbing his stuff and leaving.
"What's with him?" Rossi asks, following the team outside.
"It's better not the question it, he's letting us sleep!" Emily says making the team laugh, "see you guys tomorrow." She says.
We all say our goodbyes and I start to walk to my car.
"Hey Bec wait up." I hear Spencer call after me.
"What?" I say a little harsher then I meant turning around.
"I just wanted to say sorry about what happened, that was not right for me to do an-"
"Yeah you think?" I say cutting him off.
"Look Becca I know you're mad but-"
"Oh I'm not mad." I say letting off a fake smile.
"You-you're not?" Spencer says stuttering, stepping closer to me, as if he wasn't nervous anymore.
"No. I'm furious."
"Oh." He mumbles looking down at the dirt.
"I can't believe you would look back at my life like that. You had no right to do that."
"I know Becca. I know and I'm so sorry, I just thought I could help if I knew what was going on with you and-"
"Stop talking." I mumble.
"What?"
"Stop talking to me. Don't ever talk to me again, unless for work, but other than that no." I yell the turn around I start walking quickly to my car.
"I said I was sorry!" I can hear Spencer yell after me as I get into my car and slam the door shut.
