"When love is in excess, it brings a man no honor, nor worthiness."
Euripides
*EDITED*We drive up to a farmers market and get out of the car, the other vans pulling up shortly afterwards.
"The press are already on their way." JJ says approaching Hotch and I."We could use that." Hotch says, "It'll feed his ego. He'll want to stay and watch."
Hotch stops walking and looks towards the team and the local police, "When you get to the crime scene you need to canvass the crowd. Pay particular attention to onlookers who might be more interested in the scene itself than the victim." He says.
"Get photographs of everyone." He tells me. I nod and grab a camera from the van and then we all head to the crime scene.
"Somebody died? Oh, my god." "What happened?"
"I bet it was that stabber."
People throughout the crowd gossip about the murder. I start to take pictures and listen to the conversation."Stabber? What stabber?" "You know, the guy who's been cutting people's throats open around town." "Right."
"I got a trail of blood back here!" Emily yells from behind a booth, cause the crowd to start talking again, "But I haven't found the knife yet."
"See where it ends." Hotch tells her.
"Got it." She says standing up and following the blood.
After taking a couple more pictures of the crowd I meet up with the team standing in a circle.
"We can't run this locally." Rossi says.
"Run? It's ran, it's gone.
CNN's leading with this in 3 hours." The local detective say."Minimize his impact.
Do not give him a name.
It'll just encourage him to kill more." He starts. "Just attribute the good work to the Providence PD and leave us out of it. JJ you help settle things with the media, the rest of us need to deliver a profile."~
The team stands in front of police men in the station.
"You should know a lot of these guys need to feel powerful." Rossi says, "Producing a spectacle gives them that sense of pride."
"We think he revisits his crime scenes." Morgan says.
"And it's possible the media could have brought him here."
"We also think of this unsub not as a slasher but as an arsonist." Hotch says.
"Because the gratification he's getting isn't from the physical act of murder but from the public's reaction to it." I say.
"Arsonists draw attention to themselves through the fires they set. The location they choose is highly symbolic to them while this unsub will never set an actual fire, he has the same psychosis as one who does." Spencer says.
"Our unsub fits that model.
His locations have been pillars of the community.
The victims he picks aren't as important as the effect of killing them outside of your favorite restaurant or place of worship." Hotch says."By picking locales with the highest visibility, he's creating the highest level of fear in that neighborhood, which reinforces his feeling of power." I say. "But arsonists usually set out to hurt people."
"This guy clearly does.
And this unsub definitely falls in the category of sociopath." Spencer says."His victims are there only to achieve his goal.
He doesn't have the ability to empathize with them.
To him, they're just tools for him to use, no different than a can of gasoline and a match." Morgan states.
