I was chilling in my apartment watching my dad play with the Islanders. They were winning 2-1 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. As the Penguins scored, I mumbled fuck against my breath. I went to go get some water during their stupid-ass celebration. Damn Pittsburgh.
My phone buzzed as I walked past it. I picked it up. I got a text from Uncle Ethan. I didn't even know that he had my number.
Uncle E: Hey, Barzy girl! As u know, Shreya and I are getting married soon. We'd love for u to be at our party! Bring a date if you'd like otherwise ur going with ur brother LOL
I smiled as I read the text. I assumed that they would get married years ago, but they waited a good few years. I was surprised, but they've always had an interesting relationship, I guess.
Me: I'd love to go! I'll ask a friend if he can come :)
Uncle E: How's Seattle? U like it?
Me: Love it! The school is awesome and I love my team :)
Uncle E: Great! See u in a few weeks!
Me: See u in a few weeks!
I checked my calendar on my phone to see if I had any upcoming games on the weekend of their wedding. I didn't and felt relieved that I didn't have to miss out on anything. I went to the bathroom and started to get ready for bed. I had an old Islanders sweatshirt that I threw on before I put my hair in braids. I sat back on the couch before the third period started. I cuddled up in a blanket which I broke free from as my dad scored. I can't help but smile as my dad wipes the smug faces off of the Penguins' players.
I fell asleep after the game to the announcers talking about the game. It was a good game to watch and the score was pretty high. In total, eight goals were scored by both teams, the score 5-3, Islanders.
The next game with the Thunderbirds was an easy win. We played against the last team in the division and won 6-1. I didn't score, but I got two assists.
After the game, Nick and I went out for dinner as usual. We talked about school, the game, and finally: Ethan and Shreya's wedding.
"You know Ethan Thomas, right?" I asked. "For the Canes,"
"Of course!" Nick said. "The dude's amazing, plus he's a T-Bird alumnus,"
"He's like my dad's best friend and he's getting married in a few weeks," I told him.
"That's so cool! You've probably met so many great hockey players," Nick said.
"Would you like to meet some?" I asked. "I need a date to the thing because I'm not going with Riley,"
He laughed.
"A date?" He chuckled.
"Not really a date," I said. "As friends or something,"
"Or something?" He smiled.
"You know what I mean," I laughed. "Can you come? We don't have a game that weekend,"
"Sure," He said. "It'd be awesome to meet your dad and all of those NHL players,"
"Who knows, maybe you'll be playing with them in a few years," I said.
"Only in my dreams," He scoffed.
"Nick, you're a great player, you could definitely make the NHL," I said.
"You really think so?" He asked.
"Oh, I know," I said, taking a bite of my slice of pizza.
"You'll probably make it before I do," He said.
