It was finally Saturday, Lucina had been out of the hospital for five days now and so far hadn’t had another attack despite some of the detective’s questions, to which she hadn’t answered any. Shay had decided to take turns keeping watch on her, he and the rest of her brother’s inner circle took turns staying over on the weekdays and Ziggy would keep her company on the weekend. Even from where she was sitting in her dark bedroom she could hear him speaking with two people, who from what she could make out, sounded like Jo and Henry.
A group of footsteps walked through the hallway and Lucina winced as the lights in her room came on. “Lucina, they want to talk with you.”
She didn’t turn around but addressed the medical examiner and detective. “I don’t have answers to your questions.”
“Yes you do.” Jo insisted. “Why won’t you answer them so we can solve the case?”
“I don’t know anything about my brother’s life outside here.” Lucina growled and turned around, she heard the two adults’ gasp a bit in shock at her paler, more corpse like; complexion.
“Lucina, what’s wrong with you?” Jo stepped forward but paused as Lucina scooted away. “Are you feeling okay?”
“I’m fine.”
Ziggy frowned and turned towards Henry. “She hasn’t been eating much… refusing to sleep very long… I can’t get her to come out of this room.”
Henry stepped towards her slowly, as if she were a scared animal that had been cornered. “You need to stay healthy. It wont do anyone a favor if you die.”
“Are you sure?” Lucina asked emotionlessly. “I’m sure I’d be doing the murderer a favor.”
“Listen to yourself!” Ziggy was at her side almost instantly, holding her against him. “You act as if no one cares for you… What would I do if you were gone?”
“Find someone else… move on.”
“Never.” Ziggy smirked a bit. “You’re stuck with me forever dead or alive.”
Jo cleared her throat. “That’s great, encouraging her, but we still need information.”
“Ask away.” Ziggy told her politely.
“Since Erick’s death have you had anyone after you?”
Lucina shook her head. “No, of course I’ve also been surrounded by his friends, doctors, or you detectives.”
“Do you think you’re brother’s friends would have killed him?”
“Of course not!” Lucina’s eyes flashed in anger and a faintly haunted look. “They wouldn’t betray each other… family in spirit, not by blood.”
“Well then can you tell me how your brother was murdered in a public place without anyone seeing it happen?”
“No. I can’t.” Lucina replied, becoming defensive again.
Ziggy sighed. “Erick died near the hospital right? After most people have gone home?”
“Yes.” Henry confirmed.
“Well then, most people wouldn’t see it. Not unless there was a medical emergency and an ambulance went by.”
“You seem to know a lot about that.” Jo arched her eyebrow.
“I drive by on my way home from work everyday, you start noticing those things.” Ziggy told her calmly. “I just wish I had been driving by then… maybe I could have stopped it.”
Jo’s phone rang and she left the room, the three remaining stayed silent, Ziggy continuing to comfort Lucina, while Henry observed the room itself. When she came back a grim look was set on her face. “Dr. Morgan, we need to leave. There’s been another murder.”
Henry gave a tired sigh and turned back to the young people they had come to question. “We’ll be back for more answers… Lucina, I suggest you take Ziggy’s advice and start eating and sleeping properly again, unless you like therapists and hospitals.”
They watched as the two left, silence settled around the room as the two sat there, nether one knowing what to do or say. Lucina felt Ziggy relax beside her and soon his deep breaths told her he had fallen asleep, she looked at his peaceful face before getting up and walking out of her room. She could guess that as soon as he did wake up he would demand she eat so she decided to make lunch, she did have to admit over the course of the five days she had started to feel a bit hungry. Then again tomorrow was the ceremony, eating a day before then always made her feel sicker. It didn’t matter though because half way down the hall a window breaking in the living room made her freeze, she waited a few moments and heard faint footsteps on the carpet, as they got closer Lucina turned back and ran to her room where she jumped onto Ziggy and covered his mouth so he couldn’t speak.
“We need to leave, someone just broke in.” Lucina whispered quickly as Ziggy gave her a confused look.
“Follow me.” Ziggy replied just as quietly once she removed her hand. “They won’t find us in the basement.”
Lucina stayed behind him as he grabbed a golden dagger that was used in weekly ceremonies, she tensed up at the sight of it but knew it was only being brought along for self defense this time. Ziggy looked down the hall and motioned for her to follow him in the opposite direction once he saw the coast was clear, they had almost made it to the basement when a man’s cold voice stopped them.
“Is that my dagger?”
Ziggy turned to face the man and kept Lucina out of sight behind him. “No. Now get out. This isn’t your house, I will call the cops.”
The man laughed dryly at him. “With what? Your mind?”
Lucina felt Ziggy tense up as his bluff was caught, she tried looking over his shoulder but he moved in front of her again. The intruder took another step forward and in one swift movement Ziggy turned around, opened the basement door, and ran inside after pushing Lucina through first. He locked the door behind them and continued running down the stairs after her before going through another door at the base of the steps and locking them in the cold cement basement. Lucina’s breath was erratic with fear and Ziggy could hear his pulse racing in his ears, if the man got through the doors they would both be dead.
“What do we do?” Lucina asked as she glanced around at the soundproof foam covered walls. “We’re trapped.”
“Listen, if he gets in I’ll distract him… kill him if I have to.” Ziggy held her close to him as thoughts raced through his head. “You need to run and get help, don’t come back for me got it?”
“Ziggy… what if he has a gun? That dagger won’t do anything if he shoots you first.” He refused to meet her gaze, she was right.
“T-there is one thing we can try.” Ziggy whispered.
“No! It doesn’t work!” Lucina cried out. “You’ve seen it happen, no one survives… I don’t want you to kill yourself in hopes that it works.”
“It could be the only way. If he can’t kill me…” Ziggy trailed off as he looked at her paled expression. “Please.”
“If he breaks through the first door.” Lucina agreed regretfully. “But I pray that you change your mind.”
