Henry had been sitting in the antique shop watching cars go by when the phone rang; he slowly turned and walked over to it before picking it up and brining it to his ear. “Hello?”

“Henry, it’s Lucina.” Jo’s voice sounded in his ear, her tone suggested it was good news… about time for some too. “She’s finally woken up.”

“We can finally close this case?” Henry questioned.

The line was silent for a few moments. “Maybe not yet.”

“What do you mean?” Henry’s eyebrows scrunched together. “She still won’t speak?”

“Get to the hospital and see for yourself.” With that Jo hung up and left his curiosity to wander.

It only took a few minutes, fifteen at the maximum, to get to the hospital and find the room where Lucina was in. When Henry went inside though it only took him five seconds to wish he hadn’t come. Adam, or Lewis as everyone else there knew him as, glanced over at him from a chair beside Lucina’s bed, he turned back around without saying anything however and continued to quietly speak to Lucina. Henry hadn’t missed the look in Adam’s eyes though; they held anger, probably at Lucina, yet they also showed another emotion, a faint amount of pity. He had no doubt Adam saw himself at the camps when he saw Lucina’s scars, that without her usual long sleeves, stood out like a beacon, even her two month old wounds that had been healing during her coma were still a flared red.

“Uh, why is the Shrink here?” Lucas asked as he walked in with Hanson, joining them in the room.

Adam looked back up and walked over to them, ignoring Henry completely. “Detective Martinez has asked me to come and calm the girl down and to get her to talk with us about what happened.”

“Calm her down?” Hanson questioned. “She doesn’t look upset.”

Henry caught Lucina scowl at him before she glanced back down at her freshly scarred arms. Adam glanced at Jo who nodded for him to continue. “When Miss Mengele first woke up she tried attacking some nurses out of panic, they think it was because of what happened right before she blacked out, they had to give her a shot to knock her out again. Detective Martinez was called in and called me in to calm her down when she woke up again, then after I managed that she called you three in.”

“Has she said anything?” Henry asked Jo as he took a spare chair beside her.

“Not yet.” She shrugged, maybe Shay was right, and she did go mute.”

Lucina glared. “I never was mute!”

“Hmm, still a bit ticked I see.” Lucas spoke up and sat down across from her. “But not at us?”

Lucina went silent again for a few minutes before looking each of them in the eye. “You all want to know what happened… Who did this, why they did it… tell me, am I correct?”

“Yes.” Jo said as she looked at the young nineteen year old. “Are you willing to?”

Lucina nodded, Henry could see the somber, depressed, look in the girl’s eyes. “It is a long story though… Starting with my parents when they were still alive.”

“Take as long as you need.” Hanson replied as he leaned against the wall.

“My… parents… they started doing this when I was four. Told me that it was to help the better of mankind… make us evolved. Of course I didn’t know what they meant… I’m still not sure I understand. But I listened; I wanted to make them happy. My brother took over after he learned the ritual… then our parents died. He started a new group of people to be his followers like the ones our parents had. They killed people and animals…” Lucina trailed off, her eyes distant as she thought about it. “All their bodies were dumped in the Hudson, tied to a cinderblock so they wouldn’t be found.”

“That’s sickening, why didn’t you tell anyone?” Jo asked a bit in shock.

“I would have been beaten… badly. That day you came, when Shay was there, he took a knife… and cut my face… he made me tell the lie with a threat to be punished. I could only hope he would be caught.” Lucina wouldn’t look at any of them. “I was a coward…”

“You were trying to protect yourself.” Henry spoke up gently. “But why didn’t you tell your friends? Or Erick before he died?”

“I don’t have friends. Go to my high school and ask about me… everyone would give you the most confused look ever.” Lucina muttered. “Erick was the one who made me leave school early, before people realized I existed. Then of course he died; I lost his protection from being too badly hurt… Shay always wanted power and Erick stood in his way… I don’t find it a coincidence that Erick was murdered after their argument. Ziggy still helped me but Shay murdered him as well. And now we come to recent events… Shay held a ritual, killed a new kid who volunteered, then the next morning I angered him and he tortured me. Todd watched me until he returned, Shay seemed mad but I didn’t understand why… he was going to kill me until someone else showed up. They fought, the man won, he was so familiar, and Shay even called him Erick at one point. After that everything kind of faded to black… I could see my life flash before my eyes, just like they describe in books and movies.”

Henry caught Adam glance at him before he spoke up. “You mentioned a ritual, what is it?”

Lucina shook at the memories and took a few minutes to respond. “They drank their own blood along with mine. Then Shay kills the sacrifice unless it’s a person who volunteered, as a final test they must kill themselves… it’s so sick, but they do it all because they wish to live for eternity. They are all insane to think anyone can do that, let alone that the Mengele family holds the secret to it.”

Adam tensed up in his seat and stared at her before recovering and standing up. “Obviously your family has had mental problems, honestly, immortality? That’s absurd. Now, I don’t think I am needed here at the moment so I will take my leave.”

“It is late.” Lucas commented. “I should be heading out too.”

“We should all get some rest.” Jo replied before turned to Lucina. “Don’t worry we’ll catch Shay, for now we’ll have a guard here to make sure he doesn’t show up to hurt you. We’ll stop by tomorrow and see how you’re feeling then.”

Henry followed the others out of the room, after they were far enough away however Jo made everyone stop, sending Hanson to bring back Adam and Lucas, before taking out a file from her purse.

            “What is that?” Lucas asked.

“Lucina’s blood report.” Jo told him. “There’s something strange about it. Most people have one DNA right? Well She has two different sets.”

“What does that mean?” Hanson asked.

“That she has enough blood in her that isn’t her original DNA to show up on a report.” Henry looked at the results. “Did she ever have a blood transfusion?”

            “None.”

“Strange…” Henry read over the paper. “Can we find out a match for it?”

“I’ll get on it.” Lucas replied and took the paper. “Do you think Lucina knows about this?”

            “I doubt it.”

“Lewis, I think it would be best if she keeps seeing you. What do you think?” Jo asked.

“Fine.” Adam told her casually. “She could use some therapy after everything that has happened.”

“Then it’s settled.” Hanson yawned. “Can we go home now?”

“Yes.” Jo rolled her eyes slightly as she walked away from them.
