Blackpaw and Nightmist pretended to look scared and surprised as they sprinted through the forest. Nightmist held Lightningstar firmly in his jaws and let Blackpaw burst in the clearing before him to yowl, "Lightningstar is dead!" Shocked yowls spread across the camp. Nightmist then jumped into the clearing, holding Lightningstar. Nightmist quietly padded into the center of the clearing and calmly set Lightningstar down.
Lightningstar's mate, Snowfire, gasped and ran to the limp body of her mate. She wailed and dig her nose into Lightningstar's dark tabby fur. All the other cats gathered around their dead leader to share tongues with him the last time. All except Lightpaw. She sat darkly in the apprentices' den and looked at Nightmist from in there. She peered and realized the look on Nightmist's face. The deputy was lying as well as Blackpaw.
"I will make my journey to Moonstone tonight," Nightmist addressed the Clan. "and while I'm gone, Blackpaw will be in charge. He is the eldest apprentice and we all know that he is the perfect choice for deputy. I'll hold his and all the other apprentices' ceremonies when I get back. That is all." All the cats were silent. They all thought Blackpaw was the right choice, but some cats seemed concerned since it was against the warrior code. None of them said a word, however. Well I don't, Lightpaw thought glumly. If only Whitepaw was here. He'd know what to do.
Back at RiverClan camp, Whitepaw stood before Creekstar. All the RiverClan cats treated him like he lived there all his life. Whitepaw stood before the leader, tall and proud. The tom finally felt accepted. "I, Creekstar, leader of RiverClan, call on my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to learn the warrior code and is now ready to become a warrior," she called. "Whitepaw, do you upholds the warrior code? Even at the cost of your life?" "I do," Whitepaw replied, trembling. "Then, by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Whitepaw, for now on you'll be known as Whitefoot. StarClan honors your skills and loyalty, and we welcome you as a full fledged warrior of RiverClan." Creekstar jumped down and rested her silver head on Whitefoot's. Whitefoot licked her shoulder in affection. All the RiverClan cats cheered: "Whitefoot! Whitefoot!" Whitefoot let their cheers flood through his ears. He was a warrior now. He was Whitefoot.
