CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE - THE
WORST DATE EVER
While waiting for Alex's arrival, Lola had laid herself out along the settee and had been resting her head in an attempt to calm herself. She jolted up and rushed to the door, when the sudden noise of commotion and arguing could now be heard outside her front door. As she opened it, she was met by Jack and Alex, glaring at each other ferociously.Hearing the door open, Jack span to face Lola. "Who's this dickhead then? Your new boyfriend?" he spat. Turning to Alex and shooting daggers at him, he added, "You were the one that punched me in the face, weren't you?"
Alex scoffed. "You can't say you didn't deserve it, mate. You're a grade A bellend." He smirked. "And maybe I am her new boyfriend. What's it to do with you?"
Quickly, Lola shot Alex a sharp look, but decided that since he had good intentions in coming, she wouldn't get into an argument with him as well as Jack. Even if his taunting and teasing was likely aggravating the situation.
"I know you," Jack huffed. "You're one of them Arctic Monkeys, aren't you? I always thought you were a knob. You had your first album - bit shit, but alright - then after that, your music turned to complete shite and so did your personalities. You're all wankers. I guess that makes you a good match for Lola here. She's a total bitch too."
In the corner of her eye, Lola saw Alex clench his fist, but she covered it with her hand before he could do anything.
"Don't. He isn't worth it."
Unfolding his fist into a flat palm, Lola took his hand and led Alex into her flat, shutting and locking the door behind them. Jack presumably remained outside. They had entered into the kitchen area, where Alex eyed her worriedly. His hand was still in hers and when Lola noticed, she quickly retracted her touch, flushing with embarrassment.
Alex's eyebrows were furrowed in concern. "Are you alright, Lola?"
She nodded her head. "I'm fine. Don't worry. I feel a lot better now you're here. I can't thank you enough for coming."
"Well, I wasn't gonna let you stay alone with that prick outside your door all night."
Moving away from the door, where Jack may have potentially still been listening, Lola led the two of them into the living room. She sat on the sofa and Alex took the place next to her. They sat quietly, unsure of what to say to each other.
"It's a nice place you've got here," Alex said in an attempt to break the heavy silence.
The compliment felt forced, but Lola was grateful that he was at least trying to make things less awkward. She figured that she could at least attempt to do the same.
"Thanks," she replied. "Me and El do what we can with the money we have... which in all honesty, isn't a lot."
Nodding in understanding, Alex stood up and began to pace around the open plan apartment. In the living room, in which the two were now in, opposite the sofas and armchairs (none matching, as all had been thrifted) was a TV mounted on the wall. On each side of this television was a door. Curiously, Alex's eyes drifted between both of them and he turned back around to Lola with a smug smile.
