I cradled Ashton close to me as I paced back and forth waiting for the damn phone to ring. It's been nearly three hours since Zeke sent us away to the safe house. My heart kept thumping in my chest with fear and nerves as the rest just sat or stood around waiting in anticipation of any news from Zeke.

I could hear conversations going on around me but didn't pay them any attention. The only person I could think about right now was Zeke and my sleeping infant. I sighed and looked out the window, the was already starting to set on the horizon. Still, there were no calls from Zeke or anyone—for that matter—that had stayed back at the main house with him. Not even John called with any info.

I jumped as my phone buzzed in my pocket and I swallowed the lump in my throat as I found it out my eyes closing as his name flashed on the screen. I slid the bar and pressed the phone to my ear.

"Zeke?" I whispered ignoring the fact that everyone had stopped talking and looked towards me.

"Hi, angel"  I closed my eyes at hearing his voice after what felt like an eternity, "I'm sorry for taking so long in calling."

"Don't be," I murmured as I sniffled, "I'm just happy that you finally did."

"You think you can do something for me?" He asked making me furrow my brows which made him chuckle, "and don't  furrow your brows it'll give you wrinkles," I rolled my eyes at his comment which made him laugh even more.

"What do you want me to do?" I asked him.

"Look up," he replied just as the front door opened and everyone gasped as I snapped my head up and in doing so, I accidentally dropped my phone causing it to crash onto the floor and shatter. Everything around me fell silent as I stared at my husband, "well aren't you going t-" I cut him off by crashing my lips onto his while also being careful with Ashton who was fast asleep in my arms. I felt tears roll down my face as our lips touched.

I've only ever felt this type of fear once since meeting him but damn it, I hated it. And I will hate it for the rest of my life because I know no matter what happens in the future, this will be my life. Not just with him but with Ashton and perhaps if we ever have children together, then with them as well because that's what happens when you're married to one of Colorado's biggest mafia lords.

"I missed you so much, "I whispered and he just kissed my forehead.

"I missed you too, angel," he murmured.

The world outside of us didn't exist, nobody mattered but him. But for us. The three of us were in our little bubble that was burst by Ashton himself as he began wailing. Zeke took Ash out of my arms and held him up against his chest and not long after that did Aharon's wails turn to whimpers and sniffles.

And Ashton's cries gave the others their chance to come speak to Zeke. They bombarded him with questions about how the fight between his gang and The Snakes went and what happened.

"I don't think you and my son should be together," my mother said suddenly making me look at her confused at the change of attitude towards my relationship with Zeke, "nor do I think that it's healthy for you to be around Ashton, either."

"Monica, what are you saying?" Dad asked and she looked at us.

"It's dangerous for Kai and Ashton to be around a man who will always be having disputes with other gangs, it's not okay," she said.

"So what you said about you being happy was a lie?" I asked making her look at me, "you saying that my happiness is what matters was a lie? How can you say one thing one moment and another thing the next?"

"Kai it's for your own safety," she replied.

"What I did now was for his and our son's safety Mrs. Jacobson, and they will always come first. Their safety is my top priority before anything else. You think that I'd keep them at the house knowing that the people who I killed wanted to take him and Ashton and use them?" Zeke said making her turn to him and despite how angry he was at moment his hold on Ashton was gentle and that had the baby slowly falling back to sleep, his voice didn't raise as he spoke to her either though I knew he wanted to yell at her for her comments, "I'm not Rick."

That had her looking down at the floor, "I don't use people nor do I sell them off to someone else to use. Kai and Ashton aren't toys to be played with and used. My husband and son are and will always be my top priority, Mrs. Jacobson don't ever forget that,"

*********

After the talk between my mother and Zeke, things became tense. And I couldn't really blame Zeke for not wanting to be around her. I didn't want the two people that I care deeply about to be at odds with each other which meant that I needed to speak to her and make her see reason as to why me being with Zeke is the best thing to happen to me. I knew we would be heading home so, which meant that Zeke was busy with Caden and Tony going over possible routes to take back to the den as to not grab any more attention.

Dad had gone out with my brothers to look around the property while Caroline and Ryker were most likely packing up what little they were able to bring even if it had been for a few hours. Ashton was with Zeke so that left my mom and me.

I sighed and made my way down the go towards the little kitchen/dining room since that's where I had seen her go in. The closer I got to the room, I could hear my mother on her phone making me furrow my brows.

"Not long," she was saying which confused me, "they don't suspect a thing."

What is she talking about? "The Snakes, are -according to Zeke- no longer in the picture," she paused as the person on the other line spoke before speaking again, "I don't want Kai hurt nor the baby, do you un-"

In my haste to get away, I nearly collided with James who caught me before I fell, "woah there kiddo," he said as he caught me before I took a tumble, "what's got you in such a hurry?"

"Nothing, I just need to see Zeke," I replied and he nodded in understanding so he let me go and I dashed away in search of my husband.

Whatever my mother was planning , I'm going to get to the bottom of it because I have a feeling that whatever it was, it wasn't good.

"We need to talk," I said as soon as I saw Zeke but he wasn't alone, Ryan and Alec were with him along with my dad. They all looked up when they saw me.

"About?" Zeke asked confused.

"My mom," I said and they all gave me confused looks.

"What about her, Kai?" Dad asked.

"I think she's planning something."
