You sped through the clear blue waters, grinning with glee as you swam through schools of colorful fish and coral. Water rushed through the gills under your jaw and you relished the feeling.
Pinning your arms to your sides you swiftly propelled yourself through an arch of coral and rock and out the other side.
You thrust out your arms and webbed fingers to come to an abrupt stop and take in the scenery. Fish of every color, shape and size drifted atop the reef, filling the blue depths with life. A fond smile spread across your lips.
Your gaze moved past the bustling reef to the endless blue of the ocean. Beyond your reef was nothing but empty waters, and below that a dark abyss that seemed never ending.
Your smile faltered. The boundless blue always brought back memories and quenched your joy, and you subconsciously stroked the scar along your shoulder and collarbone.
A large shadow suddenly fell over the reef, plunging everything into what felt like night. Fish scattered and hid among the coral and caves leaving you alone in the open. You looked up at the surface to see a dark shape pass across the sky, so large it eclipsed the sun. Your blood ran cold. You'd never seen anything like it.
Smoke trailed behind it and you saw bright lights of fire, muffled booms making you flinch. The shape was headed for the island next to your reef. It was going to crash. Your mind screamed for you to take cover before you noticed a small shape fall from the craft as it passed by.
You snapped out of it and hid in a nearby crevice. A deafening boom followed as the thing crashed on the island and somewhere in the chaos you heard a nearby splash. Then everything went quiet.
Your heart thumped against your ribcage and you dared to peek out into the open. The reef was barren but fish slowly came out of hiding. You cautiously emerged from your hiding place and scanned the waters for what had fallen from the crash.
Your eyes settled on a sinking shape beyond your reef. Your blood had run cold before but this time ice spread through your veins. A human.
A million thoughts ran through your head, all of them bad. You knew they were more than just monsters from old bedtime stories, you'd seen shipwrecks, but you'd never seen a human. You thought they no longer existed yet here you were staring at one.
Your instincts told you to swim away but you hesitated. If you didn't interfere the man would drown, but then again why should you? For all you knew they could be just as dangerous and heartless as you'd been told, but fish or man you'd also been taught to help those in need.
Against your better judgement you swam towards the sinking man and pulled him from the depths. He was heavy but your tail was strong, thrusting you towards the surface. When you broke though you made sure to keep his head above the waves, and you slowly labored towards land.
With gritted teeth you let him fall into the wet sand just above the shoreline, gentle waves washing over your lower halves. Panting you put your hands on his shoulders and propped yourself up to look at him.
His all black attire was completely soaked, long brown hair clinging to his face and obscuring his eyes. Knitting your brows together you gently swept the hair from his face and your lips parted in surprise.
He was wet but handsome, water droplets in his long lashes and on his parted lips. His features were sculpted and defined, stubble lining his jaw.
He didn't look dangerous at all, no, he almost looked peaceful. But he wasn't breathing.
