Figure of Speech

1. Synecdoche - an association of some important part with the whole it represents

2. Simile - an indirect association; use the word "like", "as ____as"

3. Personification - giving human attributes to an inanimate object (idea, plants, etc.)

4. Oxymoron - a self-contrasting statement; puts together two contradictory terms

5. Metonymy - an association where the name of something is substituted by something that represents it.

6. Metaphor - a direct comparison; example: Phantom of Delight, she is a lovely rose

7. Irony - the contrast between what was expected and what actually happened

8. Hyberbole - an exaggeration

9. Euphemism - creating a positive connotation out of something negative

10. Ellipsis - the omission of words in a sentence (...)

11. Asyndeton - not putting any connectors (conjunctions or preposition)

12. Apostrophe - a direct address to abstract things or a person who passed away. 

13. Aphorism - example: out of the frying pan and into the fire

14. Antithesis - involves a contrast of words or ideas; example: to err is human, to forgive is divine (Alexander Pope); Lovers are said to speak of living deaths, dear wounds, fair storms, and freezing fires ( P. Sydney)

15. Onomatopeia - formation or use of words which imitate sounds; Tinkle, Tinkle, Tinkle

16. Allusion - refers to any literary, biblical, historical, mythological, scientific event, character or place.

17. Paradox - phrase or statement that on surfaces seems contradiction but makes some kind of emotional sense

18. Litotes - deliberate understatement used to affirm by negating it's opposite
