"I can't believe it worked, Dad, you're free!" Varian lunged at his father, wrapping his arms as far as they would go around the man. He returned the movement.
"Varian, son, you're okay! I'm okay too, don't worry." He lovingly put a hand on the kids head.

"Quirin, Sir," Rapunzel started. She had watched the scene go down, he had called Varian 'son'.
"Princess Rapunzel, what... what are you doing here?"
"Sir, you've been gone for almost a year. A lot has happened. But...before we sort through all of that, I have a question that I'd like to ask."
"Yes, of course, anything your majesty."
"Is...is Varian her real name?"

"...her..?" He looked down at Varian. "They found out?"
"Dad, please, please, this name is all I have left."
"Son- Varian, this is the Princess, I can't just refuse her, the entire being of the village depends on the loyalty to Royal Family-"
"-there is no more village, sir. It got destroyed." Rapunzel said.

"What?!" Quirin rushed to his feet, to the window, and his face dropped. Rubbled buildings, black rocks paved against the ground, crops dead.

"What happened?" He turned to face the Princess, who wouldn't meet his eye.
"Dad... I'm sorry..." Varian said instead.
"Va- You did this?!"
"Dad, please, I had no one left, I made stupid choices, I'm sorry!"
The man turned away from his child.

"I have no son." Varian let out a pained gasp. "Her name is Adaline."
