Night fall came, and the room was almost silent, aside from the snores of some other patient, and the steps of the medic guard every 10 minutes. They were slow and tired though, he'd probably only last another round or two. He could wait.

Sure enough he was right. The guard stopped his rounds, even the other patients' snores went quiet, which was mildly concerning- that would be if he was concerned... which he wasn't .

He got up out of bed, and tiptoed over to where he saw the medic put the supplies earlier. Carefully, he opened the cupboard, begging that it wouldn't creek or moan, which it didn't. He saw the bandages that he wanted, they were all stored in the upper most shelf. He groaned, and relinquished the hold he had across his own torso. Stretching up, he lent too far in and knocked against a medical beaker that was stored too close to the edge of a shelf. It tipped and fell, smashing to the floor. The guard awoke immediately, he was a light sleeper. How bothersome.

"Hey! What are you doing?! Get away from there?!" A candle was struck, but it didn't do much.
"I-I just want some bandages..." he trailed, but it made no difference as the candle moved closer.
The doors opened slowly, creaking annoyingly.

"Hello? I heard noises, is everything okay?" Rapunzel. Again. Probably on an evening round.
"Princess, the young boy was caught in the medical cupboard, he could be after chemicals-"
"Oh honestly what kind of chemicals do you think I'd find in the infirmary?! None of use to me, I just want some bandages, okay? Then I'll go to sleep."
"Bandages? Why would you want bandages Varian, are you hurt? Bleeding?"
"Why, do you suddenly care?"
"Oh course I care!"
"Cute. But it's none of your concern. You know what, why don't we all calm down, and go back to bed now? What I want can wait til morning."
"No, tell me what's going on."
"There's nothing going on!" He began pacing backwards as the light from the candle grew close enough that someone could grab him if they lunged out. He felt his hand connect with something cold, but it wasn't stone, it was smoother than that- it was glass. A window.

He glanced up; he could make out her face now, and then back over his shoulder. Up and over up and over, debating.
"Varian, don't you dare-"
"What? Jump? I'm not that stupid Rapunzel." As he said it, he lifted his foot and rammed his heel into the glass, shattering it. He then shoved his shoulder and elbow into it, breaking it further, so that he could step out.
"Varian!"
"I'm not that stupid. But I am that desperate."

It was lucky that the infirmary wasn't too high up, his foot and shoulder were bleeding, probably pretty badly. Now he did actually need the bandages. He landed roughly on a growing pile of bushes, and planned to make a quick escape, but was surrounded almost immediately. Either Rapunzel had warned the guards straight away, or they had tighter security. Probably the latter after the whole "Varians got the Queen" incident. They roughly grabbed him, and dragged him right back to the infirmary.

"WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!" The medic wasn't happy, with fair reason.
"Uh, well, Varian jumped out the window."
"She did WHAT?!"
Varian audibly drew in a hiss. 'She'. The medic wouldn't, would she?
"Yeah, I-..." she paused, confused by the nurses words. "I don't know why exactly why..."
"All I wanted was some bandages, okay? Then I'll go back to sleep, or throw me in a cell or something, anywhere away from here, but please..." he choked off, pulling and tugging at the guards that held his shoulders, tears were falling from his face, and Rapunzel wasn't sure as to why. The medic seemed to get it though.

"Uh, not this again. You are not doing that again! You hear me? It's dangerous!"
"please..." varians voice was so small, his might was strong though, as he continued his losing battle.
"I don't get it, what's going on?"
"Not to worry princess, I'll deal with this in the morning. For now, put her to bed, make sure she stays put this time, if you wouldn't mind."
"No!" His voice went from nothing to a shout. "No, no!"

"I'm sorry... why do you keep saying 'she'?"
"NO! PLEASE NO!"
"Oh, she didn't tell you?" The medic turned on her heel, the fear so strong within the child in front of her it was scary. "Varian's actually a girl." Then she marched off.

Varians broken sobs wrecked the room as his knees gave out. Now the only thing holding him up was the hands he fought against just seconds ago. He...she...? Was shaking, breath hitching in uneven takes, as he dropped his hands from where he had them across his chest. And sure enough, against the thin fabric of the infirmary gown, a shape that could only become from a woman's chest sprouted from his.
Rapunzel let in a gasp that she tried to hide, drawing her hand up to her mouth, but the damage was done. Varian gave one final pull, and the guards dropped their hold. She crumpled forward onto the tiled floor, and the two guardsmen walked slowly up to Rapunzel.

"Your majesty, we don't think she's going to be doing much in the state she's in now, but if you need assistance, we'll be outside the door, waiting. Feels like you two might want some privacy right now."
They left, their steps echoing before becoming quiet enough to be blocked out by Varians cries.

Rapunzel tiptoed towards her, she didn't want to frighten the girl... that thought felt weird in her head. Actually a girl... crazy.
"V-...Varian?" The small girl only grumbled, making her small form even smaller, and let herself fall to the side, moving so that her back faced Rapunzel, like earlier that day.
"Varian, I...I'm not sure what to say..."
"Then don't say anything. Let me be. Ignore me again, let me get better, then toss me in the dungeon and forget about me."
"But- I don't get it. Why did you tell us?"
"Tell you what?!" She moved slightly as she shouted at the Princess.
"That you're a girl."
He audibly hissed again, and somehow made her form yet even smaller, but then changed her action, getting up and moving back to her bed.

"I'm not a girl."
"Seems to me that you are."
"Yeah, well I'm not. 'Kay? It's none of your business anyways." She got under the covers and hid herself away from Rapunzel's gaze.

Understanding that the conversation was over, the Princess backed out of the room, thoughts still running wild. Varian, a girl? But, she said she wasn't? It didn't make sense, and that comes from the girl with 70ft of magic hair.
She bumped into Eugene.
"Blondie, I heard there was trouble out here, I'm assuming it had something to do with Varian?"
"Eugene... Varian's a girl."
"What?!"

They heard stomping, a few shouts of "hey!" and then the doors to the infirmary flung open.
"I AM NOT A GIRL!" Varian yelled, before slamming the doors again.
"What?! I am super confused right now Blondie. How's about we go to bed, then talk more about this with clearer, drowsy free minds tomorrow, eh?"
Rapunzel sighed, rubbing at her eyes, and smiled. "Sounds like a plan."
