Fluff to Angst

When Giyuu was a young boy him and another child named (Y/n) would play with his sister watching nearby. She watched as the two kids played within the seasons. Tsutako never thought her shy brother would make a friend that easily.

But sadly that easy way would go...

The day of when a demon attacked Giyuu found himself in (Y/n)'s brothers arms. Both children were scared and wondering where their families were. All their dreams and happy memories were tainted. But one kept hope. The other started to loose it.

When Giyuu and (Y/n) met the former water pillar Urokodaki Sakonji. One wondered of the world of a swordsman the other wondered of  how to defeat demons at all cost. But even within their time, they made him and their new friend Sabito smile.

He was glad he wasn't alone, he knew despite the troubles and problems. He had them two.
And they had him.

..

"You need to cut this bolder in order to pass my teachings and go into your final selection. If not you will stay back."

Sabito and Giyuu were pumped, (Y/n) not too much. They weren't as strong as the boys but still wanted to keep the high morale up. So even while Sakonji kept scolding them on strength and no honing their actual power, they still kept Giyuu happy.

Sabito didn't understand.

"Their the weakest! How can they get into final selection? Don't you think so Giyuu?" Giyuu kept silent, he didn't want to bash one of his friends..but it was the truth. (Y/n) was the weaker therefore...

"Y-yeah, they can be but ..they are faster than both of us. Even Urokodaki - Sensei says so! So I think they could pass."

Giyuu didn't know they were listening to the conversation. So (Y/n) just smiled and thought it was best to keep him happy. 
Even if they weren't.

Sadly only two would return from final selection..

(Few years later)

(Y/n) due to a dangerous and almost life threatening injury could not fulfill task as a demon Slayer. So rather they work at the butterfly estate. As a nurse and physical trainer. Even though some thinks what they do is small or minor it helps.

But still they made Giyuu happy. Trying to make him smile or just a smirk. That was more pay in the world! But overtime their  efforts would prove fault. Giyuu became cold and brutal to his words. Usually a small 'How are you?' or ' How do you feel?' was enough. Now he just ...Says his hello's and go. Sometimes not even a greeting.

This made the (hair color) nurse sad. Why did he changed? How has he changed?

Sometimes he wouldn't show up anymore, if he did it was to see Kocho about something or of a injury.

They knew pillars were busy ones but...A happy birthday would feel nice from a friend?

Or past friend..

Soon those hopeful nights would run thin.. Shinobu warning them of using too much for simple task is dangerous.

"Now you knew better! I will go grab your medication!" She hurried to get the healing liquid. Aoi helped the sick now patient to their bed. Their skin paled, muscles thinned. Cheeks hollow. Both, matter of fact all were worried.

They were slowly dying.

But everyday they made their time worth it, talking with younger slayer's. Having chats with pillars, even seeing the master himself. But everyday, near a window. They would ask Kanao.

"Has Giyuu dropped by?" 
Same answer..

"I'm sorry, but no (L/n)-sama.."

Waiting hours for letters, even sending crows. No avail.

Till one day he did show up.

Flowers in hand, as people moved around the hospital in feverish manner. What was the commotion about?

"I'm here to see a patient-"

"Sorry Tomioka-sama..but we cannot have any visitors, someone has passed today after illness. The hospital has no time and is in need to prepare the body. If you could tell me who those are for?"

"Oh, I understand and (L/n) (Y/n)."

"Are they for the memorial? Oh and my apologies about your lost..If you would like a few minutes with th-"

"What do you mean, my apologies?"

The nurse paled. Did he not know, he had came to visit for a while and then stopped..

"The person you are asking for sir, they died a few short hours ago."

Giyuu looked around and then hurried to their room, they had to be here? A sick joke for him not visiting? He walked to their office, it wasn't there. Instead only was a bed and a bunch of cards and flowers around the bed. He could even see gifts given by some fellow pillars.

He was too late..

He lost them..

Giyuu sat down on the bed and curled up into a ball. He teared up and sniffled.
"I'm sorry...I'm so sorry..."

He never said goodbye or even know what happened. All he knew was this:

They waited everyday for him, even to their last..
