"class, i need you to calm down," ms. bustier says, clapping her hands," adrien has an announcement to make." marinette feels herself getting excited until she sees adrien's face. he looks so sad as he stands up and clears his throat, "hi, everyone. my father has decided that it would be best if we move away from paris." he says it quickly and quietly but everyone heard it. loud gasps echoed through the classroom. rose immediately began crying and juleka put her arm around her. everyone else stares at adrien in shock before he turns around and sits back down. "now, class, i know this is a shock. we will all miss adrien, but we have to get to work," ms. bustier's high pitched voice usually comforted marinette, but now, it annoyed her. she tried to ignore all the negative feelings building up inside her, but she felt angry, upset, helpless. across paris, hawkmoth laughed as he felt the sadness and rage of the young students. "fly away, my little akuma, and evilize them!" he sends the butterfly out the window, laughing manically. the akuma makes it's way to the classroom and marinette spots it first. "it's an akuma! everyone run," she yells and points to the door. before they can flea, the akuma enters the friendship rings juleka and rose share. marinette watches in horror as her friends transform into refleka and princess fragrance. they immediately begin taking victims and marinette makes a run for it. she knows she has to escape so she can transform. luckily, she makes it to a locker room and is able to transform into ladybug. as she fights refleka, she can't help but wonder where chat noir is.

luckily, rena rouge shows up in time to help ladybug defeat the villains. by the end of the fight, there is still no chat noir and ladybug pouts as she looks around for him. "hey, don't worry about it. i'm sure he's just held up somewhere," rena rouge says and ladybug nods. "yeah, you're right," she says and then heads off to detransform. on her way to the nearest locker room, she locks eyes with adrien and his face is red and puffy, like he's been crying. her heart calls out to him, but her earrings beep rapidly, signaling her imminent detransformation. she sighs and hurries off to the locker room.

~six months later~

it had been six months since adrien had moved away and even longer since ladybug had last seen chat noir. she felt so sad everyday that she had to keep one of her special charms with her at all times to ensure that hawkmoth couldn't use her negative emotions against her. last time she had faced the villain, she realized that hawkmoth had been replaced, one way or another, by someone else. she called herself lady moth and she had informed ladybug that chat noir had been found out by the original hawkmoth. "there's no sense to keep looking for him," lady moth laughed at ladybug, who had been off her game since chat noir disappeared, "he's never coming back. hawkmoth already got to him. his miraculous is ours." ladybug felt her heart break and tried to remain focused, but rena rouge did most of the work that fight. and the one after that and the one after that and so on.

marinette spent most days thinking about chat noir and his quips and how much she wished to her his voice again, even if it was saying something annoying like "bugaboo" or "my lady". she also thought about adrien, although she could still talk to him, texting and group facetimes kept her, alya, and nino in the loop of adrien's life. it didn't replace him being there, but it definitely helped marinette cope. unlike with chat noir, who she was sure she'd never see again. one day in mid-may, she went to speak to the former guardian, master fu. she cried and told him how she had failed him, although she knew he had amnesia and didn't know what she was talking about. "there, there, young lady," master fu said, patting marinette on the back, "i'm sure whatever you did, it's not as bad as you think." she laughed ironically. "it's worse," she said before making an excuse to leave.

~one year later~

it had been a year since adrien had moved away and even longer since ladybug had last seen chat noir. marinette was tired of the monotony. everyday she had to fight a new (or old) supervillain that lady moth created. everyday, there was no chat noir and rena rouge tried to fill the hole that chat noir's disappearance left. there were many times when ladybug felt like giving up, taking out her earrings and handing them over to lady moth, just to stop having to deal with it. she remembered how many of her friends and family members counted on her to save paris everyday and decided against it each time.

one day in late september, lady moth created a sentimonster that ladybug knew she and rena rouge couldn't stop on their own. "rena rouge!" ladybug called out as they ran towards the monster, "keep it busy! i have to go find more heroes!" rena nods and jumps towards the creature. ladybug headed to the school where kagami's fencing lessons were taking place. ladybug swung in and grabbed kagami, taking both of them over to a dark corner of a hallway. "kagami, we need your help," ladybug says and kagami nods, determination in her eyes. ladybug produces the dragon miraculous and gives it to kagami. "kagami, this is the miraculous of the dragon. you will use it wisely and return it to me when the fight is over," ladybug says and kagami nods again. she clips on the choker and transforms into ryuuko. "let's go," ryuuko nods and the run off towards the fight. "i'm going to go look for carapace, help rena rouge," ladybug says to ryuuko and swings away. she finds nino hiding out in an alley and when he sees, he immediately stands up. "nino, we need your help," she says and he nods, holding out his hand. she produces the turtle miraculous and puts it in his hand, "nino, this is miraculous of the turtle. you will use it wisely and return it to me after the fight." nino nods again, slipping on the bracelet, before shouting, "wayzz, shell on!" he transforms into carapace and they take off running.

after a long and tedious battle, they defeat the sentimonster. "pound it," rena rouge says, holding out her fist and carpace and ryuuko give her a fist bump. they look expectedly at ladybug, who feels her heart squeeze. that was her and chat noir's thing. she sighs and rena gets the hint. her earrings beep and she hurries carapace over to an empty place. he detransforms and hands ladybug the miraculous. she does the same with ryuuko and secures their miraculouses.

later that day, marinette, alya, and nino are at kitty section's practice. after adrien left, marinette tried hard not to throw herself at anyone else, especially luka. she knew that wouldn't be fair to him or herself. kitty section had to replace adrien on the keyboard and, luckily, zoe played the keyboard rather well. marinette saw the way zoe and luka looked at each other while they were performing and she could tell that there was something there. she's glad for them, but felt a pang of loneliness seeing all of her classmates with partners.

near the end of the night, marinette was surprised to hear kagami's voice. she and kagami had hung out a few times after adrien left, but never around anyone but alya and nino. "hey, kagami!" marinette waved, walking over to where she was chatting with mylene. "hello, marinette," kagami said, smiling slightly at marinette. it had been a while since she had seen kagami smile. the band finished up and mylene went to talk to ivan, leaving marinette and kagami alone. "how are you holding up?" kagami asked suddenly, taking marinette by surprise. she was confused for a second until she realized that she was probably referring to adrien's absence. "oh, i'm okay. i miss him, but i still get to talk to him," marinette says, swinging her feet off the side of the boat, "how are you?" kagami sighs, "i'm okay too. he and i broke up before he left and i got over it rather quickly. i could tell that he wanted someone that wasn't me." marinette knew what that was like. "yeah, i get it. as much as i liked him, i knew that he always wanted something that i couldn't give him," marinette sighed, looking down at her lap, and kagami seemed concerned. she put her hand over marinette's and marinette looked up at her. "marinette," kagami begins, hesitating, "marinette, i've been thinking..." she trails off and marinette senses nervousness. kagami is never nervous, so marinette squeezes kagami's hand tighter."whatever it is, it's okay," marinette says, holding kagami's hand in both of hers. kagami laughs nervously, "i've been thinking that maybe i wanted something different too. when i was with adrien, i mean." marinette nods, urging her to continue. "i was thinking... maybe we should hang out sometime," kagami says, biting her lip. marinette is confused, "we hang out all the ti-" she stops, putting the pieces together. "oh... you mean..." marinette trails off. "oh, i'm sorry, i shouldn't have-" kagami pulls her hand from marinette's grasp and stands up to leave. "no, kagami, wait," marinette reaches out and grabs her hand again, "i'd love to hang out with you." she smiles and kagami blushes. "okay, is tomorrow night okay?" marinette blushes back, "y-yeah, tomorrow night is perfect." they say goodbye and kagami leaves.

"alya, you won't believe it," marinette says, excitedly running over to her best friend.
