Chapter 12
💞 Harper Marie Davis 💞
The school hallways were decorated with different color banners, posters, and ribbons that were meant to hype up the classes as they got ready for the competitions.
I was walking down the hall with Jolene and Adriana towards the seating area, dressed in our blue combat t-shirts and casual bottoms.
A group of juniors walked by us yelling out, "COME ON JUNIOR WE"RE WINNING THIS YEAR!!"
Their fellow juniors cheered in response."Nah bro sophomores are winning this shit. Right guys?" Some girl said looking at her friends, to which they expressed their agreement through loud and excited cheers.
We made it over to the seating area where we saw Adaeze doing a boy's, who I recognize to be from the speech and debate team, make up. Cece was right beside them, red faced, white headband on, tie dye patterned metal water bottle on the floor right next to where she was positioned, jogging in place.
"Hey Cece you good?" I asked her, actually concerned.
Who would want to be exercising this early morning?Cece stopped jogging and turned to us, waving her hands, "Oh! Hey guys!"
She slung her right arm over my shoulder, and her left, over Adriana's. She was a bit sweaty from her mini exercise. "Are you guys ready for today's battle?" She asked, enthusiastically.
You make it sound like we're getting ready for war. (insert eyeroll)
"Absolutely fucking not." We turned to see Anthony walking over, looking like he hadn't gotten sleep in weeks. "I stayed up all night trying to finish Mr. Abiola's packet assignment. I'm so tired right now bro, I feel like dying bruh."
"Go ahead, I won't stop you." Cece replied as Anthony shot her a glare.
"Well you probably wouldn't be feeling that way if you had started the assignment earlier." Jolene said as she walked towards a sofa.
"Well first of all, procrastination is a drug, second, I didn't have much time." Anthony said, trying to defend himself.
Jolene rolled her eyes at him and sighed, "Anthony you had two weeks to do that assignment."
Anthony looked at her, confused. "What? I only found out about it two days ago."
Jolene slapped her forehead, "Don't you check Gradio? (gray-dee-oh ; not a real school app, I just made it up)"
"Noooo......?" He drawled out his response with a sheepish smile. Jolene sighed once more before saying, "Well if you did, you would have seen when he uploaded the assignment two weeks ago. Plus you coulda asked me for help, I already did the assignment could've have been beneficial to you."
"Yeah yeah" He responded as he took a seat next to her.
"WHO WILL WIN THIS?! SENIORS SENIORS!!!" Chants from the main hallway pulled my attention away from my friends sitting on the couch and towards the place the loud voices came from.
"Those roaches. They think they can beat us?!" Cece said, looking infuriated as she squeezed her plastic water bottle. I swear I saw flames coming out of her eyes.
Damn it's really not that deep bro. By the way, where did the plastic water bottle come from? I'm pretty sure I mentioned her having a metal one just a few paragraphs ago.
"We're gonna show those seniors who's boss!" Some random girl with very colorful hair, walked up next to Cece looking just as infuriated.
Is it that serious? And who the fuck are you?!
"We have to win! I need that free trip man."
Oh shit. I forgot about the free trip
I shot up from where I was seated and quickly walked over to Cece and Rainbow hair girl, "Those seniors know nothing about sophomore power. We have to fight for that free trip!" I said with determination.
"Yeah!" Cece slapped my shoulder, "That's the spirit Harper!!"
I'm not usually a competitive person, but a whole ass excursion paid for by the school?!
Hell the fuck yeah!Let the bloodshed begin

Cece and I were walking around the field looking for more games to compete in. Over the past hour we had just been standing on the sidelines, watching other sophomores participate in various challenges. But now we wanted to play as well.
I spotted an interesting game we could join and pointed at it. "How about that one?"
"Car wash relay?" Cece read out the sign. "Yeah. It looks pretty fun don't you think?" I asked.
"I guess." She replied, looking over to the space where students were already lining up in teams.
"Hey we need two more sophomores for our team." I heard someone say.
"Oi you two over there!" The teacher hosting the game hollered in Cece and I's direction. "Come play for your class!!"
Cece and I looked at each other and she shrugged, "I guess we're playing then."
I smiled as we jogged over to the game area.
(Here's how the game goes: The first team member places a sponge in a bucket of water and runs to squeeze as much water as possible into a cup before returning the sponge to the next relay member. Both teams would be timed and whoever has the most water in the cup by the time the timer goes off, wins)
Cece stood in front of me. She was going to be the third runner in the relay while I was the fourth and last. For this race, us sophomores were going up against Juniors while seniors were competing with freshmen. Whoever wins from both races will battle for the final winner.
"Okay okay, gather around boys, gals, and my non binary pals for a legendary tournament of the classic CAR WASH RELAY!" The host, Mr. Kumar the Calculus teacher announced to the medium crowd that gathered to watch the race.
Loud cheers erupted from the audience and that seemed to boost up the racers' excitement."First up, Sophomores in blue versus Juniors in yellow!!"
The crowd cheered as we made our way to the field.
This is gonna be pretty interesting
The host explained the rules and said some other things before he blew the whistle, signalling the beginning of the race.
The first runners of both teams took off at the loud shrill sound of the whistle with their wet sponges in hand. The runner of our team, a boy named Marcus, was quite speedy as he easily surpassed his opponent.
Within a few seconds, he had already squeezed the water into the cup and was heading back to the team. Soon enough, the second runner, Thara, was running down the field.
It was very exciting to watch though also nerve wracking. I watched how my teammates hastily ran to the cup, hoping that when it's my turn, I don't trip and fall.
Thara returned and handed the sponge to Cece and she took off.
Fuck why is my heart beating so fast?
As Cece was running, I looked over to the junior's team to see who I would be going up against.
Annnnddddd..........Well shit.
