Hyunjin had finished tidying up his stuff, which was not much. He was now on the balcony overlooking the central courtyard surrounded by the four buildings. He could see students lazing around the fountain and on the grass, or walking around, books in hand.

He stayed there for a long time, enjoying the chill air of the early fall and the beautiful evening sky. This place was not all that bad after all. He then heard noise in the corridor. His comrades were back. He heard them stroll loudly along the walkway, chatting happily, sometimes evoking his door, situated at the end of the corridor. And after a while, the noise died down completely. They were all in the common room, waiting for him, as Seungmin had explained to Hyunjin.

The poor boy started stressing out, thinking he was awaited with such diligence. He had thought he would have made a discreet arrival, but it was underestimating the flashiness of his new school.

Indeed, Class C was there, in full force, seated on all surfaces of the common room, waiting impatiently for the newcomer to appear. One of them asked his comrades, “What do you think he’ll look like?” Some eyes turned to Seungmin, who completely ignored them, leaving them to their imagination. One of them replied in a sigh,

“He is probably one of those sufficient new-rich kids who leave after a month.”

“How pessimistic.”

“Well, he’s not wrong, that’s often how it goes,” said another.

“Or maybe, he’ll be like a prince. Lovable, charming, in search of fresh air!”

“You’re too naïve. His parents sent him here. He never wanted fresh air. He was forced to come here.”

“So, maybe a submissive one? Whom we could bully! That would be fun." Seungmin cleared his throat, immediately shutting up the idea.

After a short, intimidated silence, the debate took off again,

“Maybe one that’d look like a North,” said one, dreamily.

“He would have logically ended up in the North.”

“Maybe he’ll be ugly.”

“He wouldn’t be in this school, even less in this corridor.”

“Who knows? Hi father might be a friend of the director.”

“All the same.”

“All the same what? It’s possible!”

“On the contrary, it’s unlikely.”

“Maybe not that unlikely…”

“I’m telling you it’s impossible!”

“Why are you so worked up? I’m not saying you’re the ugly one.”

“Enough.”

“What a bad temper.”

The little absurd dispute triggered a general euphoria throughout the whole room, they all laughed so hard that no one heard the knocks on the door.

In the middle of the hubbub, Hyunjin opened the door, shutting down all noises.

All eyes immediately turned to him and started detailing him slowly, from head to toe, as if he was an alien. Most of them spent a long time contemplating his thin and long black eyes. Others took an interest in his jet-black hair, falling on both side of his thin face. Some were surprised to see the multiple earrings he was wearing on both ears. None of them had piercings. Compared to his comrades, Hyunjin was of medium height, maybe more on the tall side.

Hyunjin had a hard time supporting the thirtyish pair of eyes so insistingly looking at him.

Seeing how no one seemed to notice his uneasiness, too engrossed in their contemplations, Hyunjin declared,

“Huh, I feel like I’m interrupting something. Maybe I should go…”

“No!” One of his comrades finally acted. He had stood up in his exclamation and was now walking towards Hyunjin.
“Please, stay. Pardon our rudeness.” He reached out a hand.
“My name is Christopher Bang, my first language is English, so if you have any difficulty in this subject, you can come to me.”

A little more at ease, Hyunjin shook his and answered in a faint smile, trying to imitate Seungmin manners,

“I’m Hwang Hyunjin, pleased to meet you, Christopher.”

“Pleased to meet you as well, Hwang Hyunjin.”

Imitating their comrade, everyone jumped on their feet and came to greet Hyunjin, a smile on their face. They all took the opportunity to ask tons of questions, to all of which Hyunjin tried hard to answer, until they finally calmed down.

When they finally settled down, they separated into little groups, revealing the different friend circles. Christopher insisted for Hyunjin to join his, and the latter was happy to oblige. He was the only one, beside Seungmin, with whom he felt a little bit at ease.

The newcomer was then introduced to Christopher’s circle: in front of Hyunjin was Seungmin, next to the latter were seated the Lee brothers, Minho and Felix, and at their left was Yang Jeongin, who was younger than the others.

They talked for a good while. During the late evening, some students were quick to go to bed, and the little group did not wait too long to imitate them. Before leaving, Christopher invited Hyunjin to meet for breakfast the next day.
