"Now, you mustn't show this foolish man any hint of fear, or else he will call upon your bluff," Lestat tells me as he continues to fix my hair into a simple braid. His pale fingers worked hard to get every strand in the proper place. My heart raced each time the tip of his fingers grazed my ear.I was awoken by Claudia stroking my hair again in my bed. The sun had just set beyond the horizon of apartments and shops. She hummed a sweet little tune that reminded me of summertime and the beginning of fall. I had no choice but to open my eyes.
She and Louis left the flat as soon as the moon had raised up high in the night sky. I will never get used to how they live. Claudia is ready to begin anew. I won't ever get used to the child coming home with a trail of blood resting on her wonderful dress.
Lestat suggested wearing a gown that my father would never have gotten me. So I chose a dress with a plunging neckline. The back barely reaches my shoulder blades. No flowing sleeves covered my arms. Its color alone will get a rise out of him.
Yellow was always Mama's favorite. I will wear this spectacular gown proudly. Even allow each glitter and stone that sits on the neckline to sparkle in the moonlight.
Lestat even offered to act as if we were courting. I quickly refused thinking that no one in their right mind would believe that. And of course, the thought of being near Lestat out in the open where people may see rattles my thin bones.
The warm yellow fabric against my pale skin truly looks like it should be worn by a rich woman. Something I can feel Lestat's gaze upon me. Letting his violet eyes soak me in deeply. I have to keep my blush at bay.
Really makes my thousands of freckles stand out. The trim is made with a gold thread that forms small flowers. Flowers that once grew in the summer fields Mama and me would run through. Smiles form on our faces. Papa watching our fun from afar.
"How can I simply hide my anger and years' worth of pain from a sad man who gave up on me the minute his prized wife passed?" I ask him as we make our way to the carriage. There was no need to hide the bite of my tone.
I don't bother to wait for his answer. I simply start walking ahead of him and made it to the carriage first that will be pulled by two massive black horses.
I see the furthest horse has white colored hooves and the other has a stripe of light brown going along the middle of his face. They are quite beautiful to gaze upon but I don't have the time to take in all their details. There are more pressing matters at hand.
The night is filled with life and elegance. The people of the town are out and are having a splendid time with each other. They don't have a care in the world, not even thinking of others. No one looks our way as Lestat opened the carriage door.
I stop suddenly and look all around us one more time. I might not see these streets if Papa finds a way to keep me forever. Though I would fight him every step of the way this time, he won't have a grip on me ever again.
