Prologue
She had darkness nested within her soul. She needed it, A taste of fiction, enough to sustain her addiction.
As she looked up at the stars, She couldn't help it as she wondered what it would be like, to have a good riddance from all the expectations, all the possibilities that make her feel she is not enough.
She knew she was never enough. A disappointment she thought at herself. Everyone's voices went through her head saying "it's just a phase, you'll grow out of it." "How can you be sad? The world is beautiful." "You are happy now. You faked depression." "Stay positive." Until she tuned it all out into a mild lull at the back of her head, and she thought to herself, "the last one, like I hadn't tried that." And chuckled darkly. She knew the world wasn't beautiful, it was a dark, cold and brutal place. A place where the stars were no longer there, only the dark night sky existed, it stretched beyond her imagination, beyond repair, it was. The darkness made it impossible to see anything beyond the darkness itself.
All she ever wanted to hear was "It will be okay, I'm there for you." All she actually wanted was a hug from a person who understood her. "She just wanted to feel the warmth of a familiar embrace. A familiar touch. Enough to thaw out her ice cold soul. That's all she ever wanted. They say, if an event is too painful for comprehension, it may remain in a container the mind constructs to keep it at a safe remove.
Never having been fully absorbed, it
continues to exert a half-life force, to wield a sickly, intrusive power. Trauma is a vampire, but light as any student of folklore or Freud knows, will kill it. The problem is, when the shell shocked try to exhume their memories - to bring them into the light the result can be a death struggle so fierce, they may fear it's them, not the suckling pain, that's about to die. She smiled with a hint of someone who had been through hell and survived. Maybe she had.
