Chapter 2
what shall I do?
She lay there, staring at the ceiling, for god knows how long. She fell numb, from last night, but after reading her brother's letter, she felt a bloom of determination and strength, in her chest.
" What shall I do? ", the question played in her head, like a broken record. She had no leads, whatsoever.
She realised all she could do, was wait, let some time pass away. So, she gathered up enough strength to get up and go to the bathroom to make herself, a tad bit presentable.
She went to the bathroom And took a good look at herself. she looked like hell had shown it's wrath on her face.
Her natural light brown-blonde hair were tousled into a un-solvable heap. Her huge, puffy And grey-blue eyes stared back at her. She decided on a white crop tee, And a pair of baggy jeans with white converses. When she managed to finally untangle her mess of a hair, she let it loose behind her back.
She looked at herself And smiled
" I will be fine. My smile, will be convincing."
She headed downstairs And grabbed a Sandwich, And flew out the door before her mom could show up.
She wore her confidence and pride, and struted with a hard face. She knew that if she allowed herself to feel the grief for even a moment, she would not survive. Call it survival's guilt. So, she tried to shut off her emotions.
The pain lurked around, waiting to consume her. But, she was more resilient then anyone had ever anticipated.
" Omg, there she is! I just heard the news, how are you?"
Her bestfriend, Blaise Flay Caught up to her, on her locker.
Athene gave him the same smile, and said
"i'm completely fine, he's not dead, they haven't found the body yet."
"oh she's living in denial."
Blaise whispered to himelf.
" Uh, she can hear you, you know. "
"I'm so sorry about that."
"I'm heading to class, I don't want to be late."
"alright, later, Athene."
Athene rolled her eyes and went to class, she simply couldn't just concentrate on Shakespeare and Robert Frost, right now.
"Now might I do it pat, now he is praying, and now I'll do 't. And so he goes to heaven, and so am I revenged..."
Her teacher droned on and about, Hamlet, one of shakespeare's longest and influential plays.
She was there in the class, but her mind wandered somewhere unknown.
" Miss La Rue? "
" Uh, i'm sorry, professor, could you repeat the question? "
" I was asking, what is the greatest of tragedies in a metaphorical war? "
" Well, one of the greatest tragedies is surviving. You can call it survival's guilt, but when you lose what you love, and you're still there, you suddenly don't want to be there, anymore. Survival's guilt is absolute torture. "
"Wow, miss La Rue, that was quite heartfelt, but answer me this honestly, should I be concerned? "
A flash of pain assaulted her brain, but it was gone before anyone could notice it, with the exception of Ms Ray.
" No, I am fine, Ms Ray. Thank you."
" Alright then. "
Athene sat down, and regained her composure.
She spent the day, with a hard face, and a set jaw. As soon as school was over, she went down to the library, searching for books to read, And also because she volunteered to help re-shelve books.
She entered the Library, and breathed in the familiar scent of books, And coffee. This was the only comfortingly familiar this she had after her brother. She was not okay. But, she couldn't deal with loss and grief right now. She didn't want to lose herself again.
She Sat down on the floor And began sorting books.
Someone, stepped on her hand, with their black leather clad boots.
"Hey! watch it, dumbass. "
She looked up at a guy staring down at her, with his shining, black eyes.
"Uh, I'm, so sorry, actually I was reading, I didn't see you there, is your hand okay? "
" What do you think? would your hand be okay, if someone stepped on with their full body weight? "
" Oh god, its bleeding, i'm so sorry. "
She looked down at her hand, and realised her skin had broken around the knuckles and her hand was in blood.
" well, you better be. "
He kneeled down to her side, and tried to caress her hand, so that he could help.
" no, thank you. "
She snatched her hand back, and tightened her hand into a fist, now with blood dripping down.
" Doesn't it...hurt? "
She looked straight into his dark eyes, and replied;
" Only if you feel it. "
Athene got up and accidentally grabbed the book, that he was reading, and walked away to her house.
Little did she know, it was only the beginning.
