Carol Aird
The ringing in Carol's ear had been going on for too long, she was certain that Abby would not pick up the phone. Maybe she wasn't home. Carol was not sure if Abby even wanted to talk to her, after all she left her behind without informing her about her remaining. She had every right to be mad at her and hang up immediately. If she even picked up the phone.
"Hello?" Hearing her voice made Carol's heart feel warm. "Hello? Who's there."
"It's me, Carol", she finally answered, fearing her best friend would hang up.
"Oh my- Carol. I, I am so glad to hear from you. Are you alright? I was worried sick." The brunette's voice was shaking, but she didn't sound angry at all. The only thing Carol perceived was relieve.
"I'm alright, Abby. I just had to get out of New York", she explained so briefly that Abby would never be satisfied with this.
"Oh, and you never thought about telling me that you were leaving? You could've at least leave me a note! Do you have any idea how many scenarios I created in my head? Jesus." By now, she seemed genuinely upset with everything that happened. Carol heard her heavy breathing on the other end of the line, knowing well that Abby tried hard to contain herself.
"I'm so sorry Abby, but I thought you would never let me leave on my own if I told you."
"You are damn right. Where are you?"
"Lucia."
"Huh? What state is that? I never heard of that place."
"Southern California."
"So, you just decided to start over at the other end of the country and leave me here in that rat hole? Great Carol. Really great move."
"Listen, you have every right to hate me right now, but I really needed some time for myself. It felt like everything was suffocating me at home. I needed to leave."
"Did I make you feel like you were suffocating?", Abby asked after a moment and the devastated undertone in her voice made Carol's heart sink. She didn't deserve Abby, she was too much of a good soul.
"No, you weren't", she assured her. "You, in fact, are the only person I would've stayed for." Unintentionally, Carol thought about the picture of Abby, the only personal thing she took from home, safely put away in the drawer of her bedside table. She knew what Abby felt for her and it broke her heart even more.
"Carol", Abby whispered, wanting to say something more, but she didn't, she stayed silent a little longer and then decided to say something else. "Why did you decide to call now?"
"Because I missed you. Talking to you especially."
"So, Mrs. Aird, what's new in your life?" Her voice sounded soft again. She couldn't stay mad at the blonde, she had always been her soft spot.
"Well... I met someone."
This is insanely short, but I really didn't want to include a time jump into this chapter.
Anyway, I will try to post another one soon.Xo
