Ravyn:
I rolled out of bed and stretched for a minute or two before checking to see what time it was. It was only eight AM which means I had a little bit of time to myself. I quietly crept to the bathroom to take a shower, then when I was done I took my time doing my morning routine.Thursday mornings were always the quietest for some reason and I always took advantage of it as much as I could.
I did my skin care, then my hair into a slicked back braid then went back to my room to throw on some loungewear since I wasn't going anywhere.
"Ema! Ema!" I smiled to myself as I heard my one and a half year old daughter Ryah calling for me in Amharic. "Ema!"
"I'm coming Ry!"
I quickly finished putting my clothes on and left out of my room and went down the hall to her nursery.
She smiled brightly when she saw me walk in the room. "Ema! Ema!"
She stood up in her crib and reached her arms out to me and I happily picked her up.
"Good morning gorgeous." I said to her and kissed her chubby cheeks. "You hungry?"
"Yeah, yeah!"
"Alright, let's go get you some breakfast."
I carried her downstairs and let her play while I went to the kitchen to make us breakfast.
I made her baby oatmeal and cut up some strawberries to go with it 'cause I knew that was her favorite and for myself I just made an omelette.
"Ry-Ry, you wanna eat?!"
I heard her squeal then her tiny feet pattering against the floor as she ran to the kitchen.
I helped her wash her hands then secured her in her high chair so she could eat. I sat down next to her and checked the time on my phone again. It was a little past ten AM which meant we had another two hours before we heard from Abel.
Since the pandemic started and he was stuck in LA, he would FaceTime us every day at noon which was six AM where he was which meant a lot since he was not a morning person at all.
He hated that he couldn't be with us, and tried many times to come back to Toronto but couldn't because of the travel restrictions. The last time Ry and I saw him physically was almost six months ago. He left the day after Ryah's first birthday party and was only supposed to be gone for five days but then lockdown happened and it flipped our lives upside down.
Not having him around was a huge adjustment, especially for Ryah since she wasn't used to him being away for so long. There were nights she wouldn't sleep until I could get him on the phone and as soon as she heard his voice she'd pass out. Sometimes she'd walk around the house with a picture of him or would babble his favorite song to sing to her Flowers for Zoe by Lenny Kravitz but he'd always change the words and call it Flowers for Ryah instead. She missed him dearly, even though he made it a point to facetime us at least three times a day it just wasn't enough.
"Berries so yummy!" Ry smiled as she stuffed a strawberry in her mouth. "Mmm!"
"Really? Can I have one?" She nodded and picked one up then popped it into my mouth. "They are yummy! Thank you for sharing with me."
"You welcome!"
We finished eating breakfast and I took her back to her nursery to clean her up and change her into a onesie then put her hair in two little buns.
"You wanna take a picture for aba?"
"Yeah!"
I grabbed my camera and took a few pictures of us in the mirror before picking my favorite and sending it to Abel.
