Fuck.
She hitted her head against the glass. Speed bump. Athena looked out the window, and thanks to that little surprise she couldn't sleep anymore. Probably for the best, how long was she out? At least 40 minutes, the playlist had stopped, it shouldn't be long now.
On the other side of the car there was nothing but trees over trees. Something good had come out of that speed bump, she was now calmer, rational and wide awake. A lot of forest. Forest is good, right? She was used to forest and woods... no one to call the cops and snitch. If worst comes to worst she could orient herself better in the woods than in the city. I guess there's only one way to be sure.
There were two people one the front seat. A tall slender woman, and an athletic looking man with long hair and beard. They were both dressed in black suits with dark glasses. Didn't look like the talkative kind... Thank God. I wondered whether or not they worked in the institution they were taking me to or for the government and which one would be worse. Being in an institution with actual guards, instead of just the lazy guy in the lobby with the gun that doesn't care enough about his job to actually do it well, would make doing anything harder for me. It doesn't mean I'm going to escape or anything, I just don't like having my options cutted in half.
"Are we almost there?" I asked, finally, after a 6 hours flight and this pleasant and cheerful car ride.
"We should be arriving just now" saied the tall woman, fair enough at 5 '1 everyone seems tall to me but she is tall tall. The kind of tall that doesn't really need a ladder in the house to replace light bulbs. I got a kick pick when I saw her pack my bags in the trunk while I was in the car. I just wished I could stand next to her just to be sure. She seemed nice, and weird enough to catch my eye. I think we could be buddies if she changed the perfect soldier act. But I don't think anyone 100% sane would work at a cuckoo house for troubled teens or whatever it saied of the stupid brochure. Not that anyone is 100% sane.
" Thanks..."
I returned to my little new hobbie, looking out of the window and praying for a car crash. A part of me was a bit curious about this place, just a feeling that will probably go away the second I step foot in it. Like the first day of school, you are always wondering if you missed it until you have to sit through a geometry class.
She was telling the truth. I could smell the pretentiousness in the air as the huge wood and stone walls of this rustic cabin the size of a palace kept getting closer. They pulled over in the entrance. The long-haired man went in the back right away to retrieve some of my bags and get them inside while the huge woman opened the door for me. I left the car and could perfectly see now, exactly how tall she was. Reaching an impressive 6 '3. It took me a couple of seconds before realizing I was staring while the awkwardness of the moment raised around me.
"Sorry it's just... you are really tall... '' great job you moron, telling her something she probably heard and was bullied for her entire life. Real classy.
The woman just stood there staring at me for a second, maybe wondering just how big of a douche bag I was.
"I just mean... it must be nice... I can never reach the top shelves without help".
Somewhere along the lines of my awkwardness she realized I actually meant well and was trying to give her a compliment, and either that or my short jokes made her respond with a smile.
" Yeah... it's not that nice..."
"Right... " I said lowering my gaze " ... people suck"
Now she really laugh which made me feel less of a piece of shit.
" Don't worry " she said grabbing the last bags and closing the trunk "I'm sure you are going to get along great here"
"Well, one of us should. Here, let me help you with that..." I was about to help her with one of the bags when I was interrupted by the aggressive and demanding sound of a cane hitting the ground.
I turned around immediately, startled. There was this bright red hair woman with a fully purple formal outfit gripping thigh to the cane that almost made me sit my pants.
"That won't be necessary, Eve is more than capable to accomplish her duties" she gave a cold look to the woman who grabbed the bags and rushed inside murmuring "of course Ms. Venable"
The purple dragon looked me up and down with an indecipherable death stare that shook me to my core.
"My name is Wilhemina Venable, you will address me solely as Ms Venable. I am one of the responsible for this institution, now follow me and bring the document the guards asked you to fill out on the way here". I couldn't respond properly with words, I was in shock with the amount of information I had just received with this peculiar purple woman. I just waved yes with my head and swimmed along with the tide. Followed my perdition where dreams go to die.
