"Yo! In your face, twin brother!" I shout out happily as I set down my video-game controller and start dancing. Kris looks at me and just laughs. "It's only a game, Kylee. No need to be a sore winner."
My name, by the way, is Kylee Jackson. I'm a 17 (almost 18) year-old girl who lives with her parents and twin brother Kris. I study in Country High in Paradise, Ohio. I'm not the nerdy, bespectacled-girl types. You could say that I'm popular, though only for two reasons - good grades, and that I'm the only girl in the soccer team, and also the captain. I know that this is awkward, but last year, our soccer coach just saw me playing random soccer, and trust me when I tell you that I've been playing soccer all my life. So Coach just asked for special permission from our headmistress and put me on the team. This gets me on top of the snobby plastic girls' hit-list, mainly because most of the hot jocks are on the soccer team. So I try to stay under the radar.
You thought I would be a cheerleader, didn't you?
Well, you thought wrong.
I used to live in a small but cozy house south of town, but my father got promoted to being the CEO of a huge industry - Johnson and Jackson Group Of Companies. Apparently, the 'Johnson' guy did some fraud but couldn't get away with it. And to tell the truth, I really like the new 'Jackson and Jackson' name. Anyways, now we're rich, and live in this ginormous house - with seven bedrooms, a study, a huge living room, and pretty much everything that a rich house has - in a new neighborhood with houses like ours. Mom and Dad also promised me a room of my own, instead of sharing one with Kris, which I am really happy about (since in my opinion, a girl cannot sleep in the same room as her brother).
As I dance to my video-game victory, Mom calls to us from downstairs. "Kylee, Kris! In the dining room, now!"
"Uh-oh," says Kris, sounding bored. "Mum sounds kinda happy. Which means that we might be in trouble. Stop your funky chicken-man dance, and get your lazy ass downstairs." With that, he gets up from the TV-room floor and leaves the room.
I shrug and sit back down to reset the video-game. But Mom - who sorta wants to make me deaf - yells her head off again. "KYLEE JACKSON! DINING ROOM, RIGHT NOW!!"
Grumbling, I go down the huge flight of stairs, through a corridor and finally into the dining room. Mom and Dad are there, but Kris is nowhere to be seen. "Hey Mom, hey Dad," I say, sitting down on a chair.
Mom smiles at me. "Look, Kylee. Since it's our first week here in this place, we've invited our neighbors over for dinner. They're gonna be here in about an hour, by 8 pm. So freshen up and go dress up like a girl please." She eyes my baggy clothes and t-shirt.
I stare at Mom in shock. "Mom! Our neighbors are gays!" I protest. Yup, the neighbors living on the right side of our house are a gay couple. I saw them once, making out in front of their window. Not a very pretty sight, I tell you.
Both Mom and Dad look utterly baffled when I say this, and Dad starts laughing. "No, Kylee! Not them. The neighbors on our left. The Dashners."
Dashner? This is the name I hate hearing. Ever since Brandon Alex Dashner stepped into my life.
Ugh. Don't think about him, Kylee.
But sometimes I do. I hate that guy. He's the most popular and hottest boy in our school. Which, of course, means that he's the meanest and most badass guy in creation. He annoys me to death, seriously. He tries everything he can to make my life a living hell, only because our coach chose me soccer captain and not him. Believe me, if Brandon were soccer captain, we hardly would've won any match. He doesn't know a thing about teamwork and probably wouldn't give a shit if we ever lost any match. I guess the only good quality in him is that he plays excellent soccer. He's about as old as me and in the same year, but we're seniors, so hopefully I won't have to see him again next year.
