Newt hasn't seen his best friend Thomas in three months. He didn't see him the whole summer because Thomas was away. He was upset but not too upset. He still had other friends. A few, at least.
Now, he walks into the first day of eleventh grade, slightly nervous to see him. He doesn't even know why. He walks into his first class and sits in the back, watching the door. He chews on his lip nervously.
Then, Thomas walks in. Newt's heart jumps into his throat and he really doesn't have any idea why. Thomas walks over to him, grinning.
"Hey!" He says. "I haven't seen you in ages!"
Newt coughs, trying to find words again, which have strangely vanished from his brain. "Yeah, I-I-yeah."
"Miss me?" Thomas says, grinning widely.
"Y-yeah, of course." He stutters.
Thomas smiles. Newt gives an awkward smile back.
"Are you good?" Thomas asks, studying him. "You're acting weird."
"What?" Newt says. "Fine, yeah. I'm good. Not acting weird. Great, even. It's g-great to see you."
Thomas gives him a weird look. "Right. Well, sorry I was gone the whole summer." He says, smiling softly.
Newt looks at him, melting slightly. Then, he realizes he's supposed to talk now. "It's fine, Tommy. I still had Minho."
Thomas nods. "Right, right."
"Are you good?" Newt asks, English coming back to him.
"Huh?" Thomas says, turning to him. "Oh, yeah." Thomas smiles again and Newt's heart jumps into his throat.
After school, Thomas insist he come over. They walk over to his house. Then, Thomas stops walking.
"Tommy, what's happening?" Newt asks.
Thomas hugs him. "I'm sorry," He says. "I just missed you."
Newt hugs him back, his heart beating really fast. When their skin brushes, it sends electric shocks through his body. He pulls away, red in the face.
"Right, let's go then." Thomas says, also slightly red.
Newt nods. "Yeah..."
When they get there, they sit on the couch.
"Do you want, like, food or something?" Thomas asks.
"N-no, I'm good." Newt says, whose stomach is turning too much to eat anything. "I'm not hungry."
"Alright." Thomas says. He leans against the arm of the couch. "So, how was your summer?"
"I didn't really-I didn't really do anything." Newt says. "How about you? How was...where did you go again?"
"Europe." He says. "Just...you know, everywhere. My parents wanted me to experience 'different cultures'." He says, doing air quotes.
Newt smiles, laughing slightly. "Well, was it fun?"
"Yeah." Thomas says. "I mean, I guess so. It wasn't bad, certainly."
Newt nods. "Yeah..."
When he gets home, Newt lays on his bed, looking at the ceiling, watching the fan spin. He's thinking about Thomas. Something is different and he can't work out what. Thomas has been his friend for so long, so what's changing now?
He shakes his head and sits up. Why does everything have to be so fucking hard? He sighs and walks out of his room and into his little sister's room.
"Hey, Lizzy." He says, sitting on the edge of her bed. "How was your first day of school?"
"Good." She says. She looks at him. "Well, what is wrong with you?"
"Thomas." He says, looking down.
"Was he mean?" Lizzy asks.
"No, he's a perfect fucking angel." Newt says angrily.
"Then what is wrong?" Lizzy asks.
"I don't know." He says quietly.
"Newt, are you okay?" Lizzy asks, folding her legs under her.
"I'm okay." He says. "It's just...I have a feeling."
"Care to elaborate?" Lizzy asks.
"I can't!" He says, squirming. "I don't get it!"
"Okay," She says. "Explain the feeling."
"My stomach hurts and my heart is beating way too fast and-" Newt stops. "What?"
Lizzy has a grin on her face. "That sounds like you're in love, Newt."
"He's my best friend, Liz." Newt says. "I don't love him like that!"
"Then tell me what the feeling is." She says.
"I don't know." He says. "But I'm not gay."
"I never said you were." Lizzy says. "You could be bi or something."
"I don't like boys!" Newt says.
"Yeah, I know." Lizzy says. "You like one boy."
"I do not!" He cries. "I like girls!"
"Okay." She says. "Whatever you say. But it sounds like love, Newt."
Newt glares at her. "I'm leaving. You suck and I hate you."
"I love you too. Hope you realize I'm right." Lizzy says.
Newt walks out of the room and back into his own. He lays on the bed. Maybe she is right...but no. That can't be true. He groans. Everything sucks.
A/N: Guess I'm writing another book. I'm not surprised at myself anymore. Anyway, thank you guys so much! I love you all so much!! <3.
