"Maybe I should tell him." Newt says to Lizzy while they sit on the couch.
"No shit!" Lizzy says. "You should have told him the day you realized!"
"I'm just scared." Newt says.
Lizzy sighs. She takes his hand. "Newt, you don't have to be. Look, do you want me to talk to him?"
"What?" Newt says.
"I'll find out if he likes you." She says. "Yeah. Tomorrow at school."
"Oh god this is such a bad idea." Newt says.
"Oh well." She says.
At school the next day, Lizzy runs up to Thomas.
"Oh, hey, Lizzy." He says. "What's up?"
"Do you like Newt?" She says.
"What?" He says. "Of course I do. We're best friends. What kind of a question is that?"
She rolls her eyes. "Do you like him, like, you know, as more than friend?"
Thomas turns red. "Um...why are you asking?"
"Don't avoid the question." She says, poking his chest. "Answer me. Do. You. Like. Him?"
"Wh-why do you care?" He says.
"I'm his sister." Lizzy says. "I'm just trying to look out for him. So do you like him or not?"
"Well, are-are you gonna tell him what I say?" Thomas asks.
"No." Lizzy lies.
Thomas nods. "I-I-yeah. I do. I...I couldn't ever not. He's..." Then he blushes. "Uh...yeah. I'll just stop talking now."
Lizzy smiles. "Okay, Thomas. Well, just for the record, he likes you too."
And she walks away.
"Yes, you idiot!" Lizzy says, walking over to him after school. She hits him.
"Yes, what?" Newt says, rubbing his arm.
"He likes you." Lizzy says.
"Who?" Newt says, turning bright red.
"Thomas, you stupid, stupid boy." Lizzy says.
"No, he doesn't." Newt says. "He probably just lied."
"I can see lying the other way around, but why would he lie that he liked you?" Lizzy asks.
Newt sighs, running a hand through his hair. "I don't know. It's just so hard to believe. It doesn't make any sense."
"Aw." Lizzy says. "You're cute. An idiot, but cute. Anyway, Thomas is coming over."
"What!?" He says. "He can't! I'll be so weird! You can't just tell me these things and then invite him over, Liz! God! Tell him I'm sick or something! Or...or...or that I've broken a bone! Or...something."
"Newt," Lizzy says, putting a hand on his arm. "Relax. You don't have to bring it up. But you should."
Newt groans. "I bloody hate you."
"Love you too." She says, kissing his cheek.
Newt sits on the couch, anxiously waiting for Thomas to arrive. When he does, Lizzy runs over to him first. She whispers something in his ear and Thomas turns bright red. Newt gets up.
"Lizzy leave him alone." He says. "Hey, Tommy."
"Hey." Thomas says, smiling slightly, his cheeks still red, but less so.
"Listen, Tommy, I should probably-" Newt pauses. "I'm sorry. I'll be...less weird. I'm an idiot and I'm sorry."
"You're not an idiot." Thomas says.
"Tommy, you're sweet," Newt says. "But I am." Only an idiot falls for his best friend, he thinks.
"Why?" Thomas asks.
Newt sighs. "I can't...I can't really tell you that."
"How come?" Thomas asks.
"Look," Newt says sharply. "All your questions are quite endearing, but please, don't. You don't want to know, okay? Okay."
They sit in awkward silence on the couch.
"I'm sorry." Newt says. "For snapping at you."
"It's alright." Thomas says. "I'm sorry for asking so many questions."
Newt chuckles. "Don't be. It's cute." Then he realizes what he just said and turns bright red. "Oh shit. I mean, er, I mean-"
"You think I'm cute?" Thomas says.
"Well, I mean, yeah-no-wait I didn't say anything-crap-I-" Newt stammers.
Thomas smiles. "You do. You think I'm cute."
"I do not." Newt says, trying not to blush but failing miserably. "I think you're..." He attempts to think of something he could say that could make this better, but the only other thing he thinks Thomas is is hot and that wouldn't help anything at all. "Yeah, okay. I maybe think you're a little bit cute."
"Oh my god, you admitted it!" Thomas says. "You never admit shit like that!"
Newt shifts nervously. "Tommy, please don't-"
"I'm not going to." Thomas says. "Mostly because I think you're pretty cute too."
Newt's eyes widen. "What? Lizzy wasn't lying?" His hand flies to his mouth when he realizes he gave her away.
"She told you?!" Thomas says. "She said she wouldn't!"
"Yeah, well..." Newt says. "It kinda worked out, didn't it?"
"I guess so." Thomas says.
Then, he leans forward and kisses him.
