It's been two years since I was diagnosed with cancer, lung cancer to be specific. Everyday, I lay on a hospital bed watching anime and reading manga to pass the time. Even with all my mother and doctors effort, I have yet to get any better. My body only grows weaker with each passing day, and I feel like my time in this world is almost up.

"What are you thinking about?" my mother asks fluffing my pillow as I lay back down.

"I wish to see the world before I die" I responded.

"Don't say such things" she dismisses. The talk of death never sat right with her, she tries to avoid the topic every time it comes up but it's inevitable at this point.

"Can I please go outside, just once" I pleaded "I'm tired of seeing the world through a window" I cried. There was a large window with thin white curtains over it beside my bed, it was the only source I had to the outside world but even then my view was still restricted.

"I'll speak with the nurses" she smiled before standing up from her chair and walking outside the room.

I spent my whole life stuck in a hospital, even before I was diagnosed. My lungs have always been bad so regular doctor visits were a must, and limited physical activity restricted me from going outside. So just once, i'd like to see the blue sky and white clouds from other than the glass of a window. To feel the grass between my fingertips and smell the air outside just once, would mean the world to me.

My mother came back inside with a wheelchair, wheeling it beside my bed and helping me onto it. She pulled the covers off my body, as I tried to stand up leaning on the chair. I sat down and she wheeled me outside to the hallway, down the corridor and to the hospital garden.

It was a bright summer day, with the sun beaming down and no clouds in the sky. The garden was covered in flowers with a small path circling around. I could smell the flowers of the garden as their aroma filled the air. My mother wheeled me down the path as I ran my fingers on the petals of the flowers. We stopped in front of a beautiful display of white roses. I liked the white ones because they could hold any color, similar to a white canvas.

"Roses are my favorite" I spoke softly.

"You're just like your father" she smiled "He liked deep blue roses" she explained "Something about the simplicity of them."

I chuckled looking up at the sky, a thought came into my head as I stretched my hand out as if to touch the sky.

"If I was to be reincarnated after I die" I began "I hope it's somewhere familiar"

"Why is that?" my mother asked.

"So I can have fun" I smiled.

A pain came rushing to my chest, I gripped my chest trying to contain myself but the pain was unbearable.

"Lucy are you alright!?" my mother called but I was unable to speak as the pounding in my chest became stronger. I coughed harshly blood spilling from my mouth, I looked down at the blood staining my hospital gown in shock.

Soon the room began to spin and my eyes rolled to the back of my head, everything became dark and was followed by a terrible silence.

Is this what death feels like?
