Chapter Four

I gulped and started to get up, when a familiar voice broke through the stiff silence. Immediately, every eye turned from me and onto him.

“WAIT! It wasn’t her fault! It was mine! I.....I started it,” the voice said, breathlessly racing over to where Mr. D had the death grip on my shoulder. I closed my eyes tightly, as if in pain, recognizing the voice, and hoping dearly it wasn’t who I thought it was.

Unfortunately, that was exactly the case. There, next to me, stood Devin, who was bravely facing Mr. D with such a defiant look on his face, I almost believed it WAS him that started it.

Mr. D looked back and forth between Devin and I, and after what seemed like years, finally sighed and whisked Devin away. Before Devin was escorted out the door, he turned towards me and gave a grave smile. I owed him SO badly. I let out a sigh of relief, but then stared at the place where Devin had just been standing, and suddenly felt very scared for my friend.

"Wow," said Silena, "I haven't seen so much emotion in Devin's face since..." She trailed off here, sharing a dark look with Rose, as both of them remembered something sad.

I decided if they wanted to tell me, they would. And besides, it was Devin’s business…not mine. I bade them goodbye, then walked back to Cabin 10, deciding that from there I’d plan where I’d go first. Hopefully, I’d run into Percy or Cassie or somebody to help me out…

I had a lot more time than I expected, so I took some time to walk around the cabins, admiring each one. However, it was not as peaceful as I would’ve liked, as guys from the other cabins called out to me and pointed out my new look, seeming to have forgotten what had just happened.

I rolled my eyes at them and continue on my walk, but it was all starting to become more irritating by the minute.

“Hey, uh…what’s your name? Vi…Vi…Vicky?”  I groaned as a boy with curly auburn hair from Apollo’s cabin called out to me, with a name that was nowhere close to mine. “Why don’t you come on over? Let me serenade you with my chords of steel!”

“Don’t bring a mirror now, there’s no need to dress you up anymore…Not until the blessing is over anyways!” Another boy from Apollo cabin added. I felt my face turn crimson. I was so mad, I stormed away hearing the Apollo boys’ "Oh," to my attitude; hopefully my anger was evident as I kicked a rock into the bush.

“OW!”

I had to stifle a scream. I was near the Demeter Cabin, where plants of every sort were out, basking in the sun. I was cautious of the sound that came out of the bush. I slowly made my way towards the bush as I watched it rattle and shake. Grunts were heard from inside the bush.

“H-Hello…?” Out popped the end of a goat, which made me scream again, but then Grover poked his head out.

"Do you mind? I was trying to chase a Tree Nymph," he said irritatedly, as he rubbed his head where the rock had probably hit him. “Oh, Violet….What are you doing kicking rocks into bushes!?”

I placed my hand over my heart, which was still beating hard from the fear of the previous moments, and slowly began inhaling and exhaling

“You scared me!” I scolded him.

“Yeah, well you really didn’t announce your arrival either," he said, as he brushed off leaves that hung onto his shirt. I stared at him until I realized his legs were...a bit different.
