Chapter Six
“All hail Devin Henderson, Son of Athena!” Chiron bellowed. The campers still seemed in shock after Percy’s claiming but the Athenian kids managed to rush over to Devin to welcome and congratulate him. As I searched Devin’s face, I wasn’t quite sure what he was feeling; shock, extreme sadness, disbelief, or simply relief.
I shot him a reassuring smile and he seemed to loosen up a bit. Beside for the Athenians, everyone was standing around surprised, some even still subconsciously kneeling.
“I take it this doesn’t happen often?” I whispered to the girl next to me. A strand of her dark brown hair almost smacked me in the face, as the wind blew it around, showing off her waves. When the girl turned and looked at me, I couldn’t quite tell what age she was, between her cute baby-like smile and her seemingly all-knowing sky blue eyes.
“Of course not,” the girl told me quietly, “The last time a child of the Big Three arrived, it didn’t exactly end well, and at least that’s what I’ve heard.” I could tell by just listening to her that she was shy and soft-spoken.
“Oh,” I managed to squeak out; as the girl casually started stroking a flower I was standing by.
“I’m Camellia, by the way,” she muttered as I struggled to hear what she was saying.
“I’m Viol-" I began, only to be cut off.
“Oh I know who you are," she said dreamily, and started stroking another flower and quietly whispered to it, so I decided to leave her alone. Talking to her almost made me fall asleep, but not because she was boring; it was her voice that did it. That soft, yet dreamy and airy voice could put anyone in a deep trance.
I stumbled away, heading to your cabin, but I was again intercepted.
“Nice job not dying,” a voice from above me said. I glanced around, searching for the speaker. The only people I could see were the ones who were looking at me like I was crazy.
“Up here, smart one,” the voice teased. Even before I looked, I thought I recognized that condescending tone.
Turns out, I was right. There, above me, sitting in the branches of a skyscraper-tall tree, was a pretty girl with golden hair curled in loose ringlets and sea blue eyes. I knew I’d seen her before; Jamie. She gave me a white-toothed smile after seeing my confusion.
“It’s Violet, right?” she asked while munching away on a green apple.
“Yeah, Violet. You're Jamie?” I asked, still recovering from Camellia.
“Last time I checked I was!” Jamie was sarcastic and loud, and yet still funny. “So how’d you get here Violet?”
“Um, by taxi?” I replied hesitantly. She laughed and the sound reminded me of jingling bells.
“No silly! I meant how as in, what’s your story? Did you have to fight any monsters?” Her tone had taken on a curious edge, so I tried to answer to the best of my ability.
“Well, I killed an ogre/trollish thing after it interrupted my French class......What about you?” Jamie broke out into another grin and I could see a mischievous glint in her eyes.
“Long story short, my principal ended up to be one of the three Gorgons- Stheno to be exact- and tried to kill me. But ironically, I ended up turning her to dust with a book called 'Your Students and You; Your Guide to Becoming the Best Principal Ever!' Well actually, it ended up being a sword that killed her, but I like that version better!”
Jamie laughed again, and, this time, I joined her.
“I can tell you're a pretty good fighter. You were pretty badass out there," she said with a hint of admiration coloring her tone. I blushed, embarrassed but managed to nod.
