Chapter Twelve
I swear, I was having the time of my life.
I flew around, a blur to everyone else. My sword glinted in the sunlight, deadly, yet beautiful. I ran through the woods, as silent as a ghost. I wasn’t going for defense this time. I was going for the flag.
I was going to prove to anyone who doubted me that I was strong enough….
I have a lot of emotions bottles up inside of me, okay? Just…bear with me. Please.
So. I was running through the forest. It had been about 5 minutes since I had ran into anyone on the opposing team, the Red team, which was captained by Hermes, along with Athena, Ares, and Demeter. My team-the Blue team- was captained by Hephaestus, with Aphrodite, Dionysus, Apollo, and Poseidon. Our team was 2 campers short of the other, with 31 to the Red Team’s 33. But still, I was going to make absolutely sure that we won.
Suddenly, from out behind a huge tree, two campers appeared- with red plumes adorning their helmets. I raised my sword, getting ready for a fight.
“Violet?” One of them asked, his familiar blue eyes sparkling. My eyebrows furrowed for a moment, but I kept my guard up. He laughed. One minute later, I recognized him.
Luke.
“Oh…hey, Luke,” I said slowly. Technically, him and his red pal were enemies to me right now…and they were holding me up.
“Isn’t she cute when she’s determined?” Luke said, turning to his friend, who I saw was actually my friend Devin. He blushed before giving Luke a small nod. Luke clapped him on the back, not at all uncomfortable, as Devin obviously was.
“So, Violet,” Luke started, giving me his million-dollar smile, “Are you going for the flag?”
Okay. I may be a daughter of Aphrodite, but I’m not stupid. He was obviously trying to distract me from getting to the flag…Maybe I was close…
Maybe too close for comfort.
Or, maybe it was a trap.
You never know.
I decided to play along- only for a minute, though. “Oh, Luke,” I said, smiling at the ground, “Even if I was, I wouldn’t tell you.”
“Really?” Luke raised an eyebrow, “Well, that’s too bad….Because, either way, we have to fight you.”
There it was.
Luke slashed at me with his sword. I blocked, and grabbed at my bow and an arrow from my sheath. I had gotten pretty good in the last few days.
When I raised it and aimed it at Luke, I could see Devin pale through the corner of my eye. I rolled my eyes and released the arrow, which pierced Luke’s clothing (yet, luckily, not his skin) and held him to a tree. I let a few more arrows fly, and in a minute, he was stuck to the tree.
Yet somehow…he was still smiling.
Then, I turned to Devin. Since it bothered him so much, I tucked away by bow. I brought out Agápe and began to fight my heart out.
Granted, Devin was good, just not good enough to block several hits from me. His cheek was bleeding (and yeah, I feel bad about it) and he had a cut on his arm when I looked back to see him slumped against a tree as I ran to find their flag.
I really did feel bad…But I also felt proud…
They had been at Camp for months or even years.
And yet, still, I had beaten them.
*****
When I found the flag, I saw I wasn’t alone.
