After having brunch together, Clerk and I went to the terrace to spend some time.
"So, you were already well trained there in Britain?" He asked.
"Yes, we were being trained for the war and father wanted me back since mother was not well." I told him briefly.
"How is Mrs. Brown doing now?" He asked.
"She is better, but sometimes she looks like she is deteriorating. She scares me sometimes." I expressed my concerns.
He leaned on the boundry wall. "Don't worry, she will be fine. After all, you are now here to take care of her."
"I am not able to give her enough of my time during the day because of the training. Thanks to father that I have this privilege of coming back home every day. At least I am seeing her every evening." I felt grateful.
"Of course, she needs you!" He smiled and I smiled at him. I think he understands in a way that no one else does. The best thing about him is he listens to me. That's more than enough for me. At least, I have someone other than my mother in this world with who I can share anything.
When I leaned over the boundary and looked down, I noticed Avni watering the plants in the garden.
After few seconds, Clerk queried. "You like her?"
I flinched in shock and stared at him like a dumb. "Huh, no! Not at all. I was just...just..."
"She is the maid here right?" He asked to confirm.
"Not the maid but he is the daughter of the man who works here." I said.
He furrowed. "The servant, what was his name...oh yes, Bhavani right?"
Instead of saying anything, I looked away.
"He is being forced to work here because he has borrowed some money from father. I don't have any issue him working here but just because of my silly act, he was forced to send his daughter to work too. Whenever I see her, she reminds me of my guilt. It bothers me day & night." I opened up about my thoughts.
"So, that's why you were constantly looking at her like that?" He revealed about his guess.
I glanced at him feeling embarrassed. "No, I mean, she makes me re-think about my deeds so I get lost in my train of thoughts."
"I see, I noticed that." He said and looked at Avni who was unaware of our gaze. "I thought you want her that's why you are glaring at her."
"No, absolutely not. I don't think of her that way." I blinked away ignoring him who was still watching her. I didn't dare to look at him or Avni.
But, what Clerk said, could that be the truth?
Was I staring at her every time because I have started liking her being around?
No, that can't be possible.
She just works here and her father is a loyal man who serves our family day and night. I can't even imagine in my wildest dream that she and I can ever be on the same page!
No, we belong to not only different pages, but totally different books. Even our genres are different.
"Let's go downstairs & take rest for an hour." I offered.
"Sure, I am tired too, after having such a nice meal." Clerk replied and we went down. I had told Bhavani to arrange the guest room for him so I let him rest there and I went to my room.
.
After changing my clothes, I grabbed a book and started reading it while sitting on a leaning couch.
