While I was waiting for Avni to come, father suddenly entered with his best friend Major Stewart Linton because it was luncheon time.
"Edwin, my dear son!" Father's enthusiastic tone made me even more attentive towards them.
"Good after noon, father. Good after, Major Linton." I greeted humbly.
Father nodded smiling at me and his friend. "Oh! Good afternoon, son!" Major Linton greeted back with a big smile. The way father was smiling, he looked like he had more than a little whiskey today. "Let's have luncheon together." He announced hugging me sidewise and bringing me to the dinning area like a friend while his friend followed us. I was surprised to see such a different behavior from him. I felt like he got confused between me and his friend.
.
"So, how is your training going, son?" Major Linton asked formally.
"Very well, sir." I replied with formal nods.
"How is Mrs. Brown doing these days?" He generally asked while taking a sip from the glass while Bhavani was serving the food.
"She is recovering faster now, looks like she will be able to have dinner with us." I said feeling happy looking at both the men.
"Ahh, how I missed my wife!" Father shook his head.
"I am sure you did. Don't worry, Brown, she will be more happy and fine when she will know the good news." I furrowed waiting for him to spill everything.
"Oh, yes, absolutely. She has been waiting for this day her whole life. I am going to tell her after I finish." Father replied excitedly.
"And, if Mrs. Brown feels fine health-wise, it will be a pleasure for us to host her too." Major Linton said with a proud face.
"Sure, I will try to bring her too." Father nodded to which I frowned at their conversation not getting anything.
When Major Linton saw me, he finally uttered. "Oh, we forgot to mention to you, Edwin. I and my wife are celebrating the fiftieth year of our togetherness. So, you and your family are welcome to the celebration. Please, make us grateful and more jolly by showing your presence there in the evening." He invited and I understood why and where father wanted to take mother.
"Congratulations, Major Linton. Happy wedding anniversary." I wished him.
He nodded. "Thank you, son."
.
"Don't forget to bring, Mrs. Brown too." Major Linton said to father while sitting in his car when he was leaving.
"I will, I will!" Father nodded standing at the entrance with a very, very happy face while I was waiting there in the living room.
He turned and walked towards the living room. "Be ready by six in the evening; we are all going to a party. I will talk to your mother first. Excuse me, son." Saying that, he left the room and went towards mother's room. His excitement was new to me but I was happy that he was thinking of involving mother in his happiness. After a long time, he thought of his wife. I sighed and sat on the sofa.
Even after waiting for hours, I didn't see Avni. I wanted to ask Bhavani but I was a little hesitant. When I saw him going towards the garden, I finally gathered courage to ask. "Uh, Bhavani?"
"Jee, chhote hukkum?" He turned to see me while holding a water can.
"Is Avni fine?" He furrowed when I queried. "Uh, I mean, you are doing the garden work today all alone, that's why I asked." I clarified.
"Jee, hukkum, fine. She go bazaar. Come late." He replied.
"Oh, fine." I chuckled. "You please, carry on."
