I know, I ruined it. I absolutely ruined it for her. Though I had many questions about her identity and intentions, I knew, deep inside, I have started feeling concerned about her well being. I don't know what to expect from her, because I hurt her. If she never wants to see my face again, it will be totally understandable. What was done and what could have been done was two different things.

Also, I didn't want to give her any false hopes. My intentions were quite clear of not hampering anyone's peace. She had an expectation that I couldn't fulfill. You can't make everyone happy in your life. To make someone happy, you might have to hurt someone else's expectations.

The very next day, I went straight towards mother's room to greet her. She was alone there eating her morning meal. Not that I expected to see someone in particular but I thought my mother might be having the company of her new caretaker or her father. And none of them was there.

"Good morning, mother. How are you feeling today?" I humbly asked.

"Oh dear, Edwin, I am absolutely fine today and extremely happy and excited about your future."

"My future?" I furrowed.

"Yes, your future, which will now be ruled by a beautiful woman named Scarlett." She sounded dreamy.

The moment I heard the name, my nervous system started worrying.

"Mother, do you really think this union should happen?" I showed my doubts.

"Why not? I believe this is the very first time your father thought about your future happiness before making this decision. Scarlett is absolutely a gorgeous lady. She will make your world worth living. You will enjoy whatever you do because she will be always there with you when you need someone to share your sorrows or happiness, failures or achievements, thoughts and dreams. Your life will be complete, son." She happily elaborated her vision about my future life with lady Scarlett.

I was about to speak again but a knock on the door stopped me and I instantly looked at the door.

My mother announced. "You can come in."

I nervously looked away because I didn't have the courage to see Avni's dull face and her eyes filled a list of queries.

I was blinking with first heartbeats and looking at nothing in particular.

The door opened and the moment I heard the footsteps, I recognised that it wasn't Avni but her father Bhavani. I instantly looked at him while he was walking towards mother's bed with the breakfast tray.

Where is Avni?

My mind drifted instantly towards last night's visuals. I started feeling guilty again.

While I was lost in my train of thoughts, mother made me wince with a loud voice. "Edwin?"

"Huh, mother, parson, what were you saying?"

"Uh, nothing, I was just asking whether you had your breakfast?"

"Oh, no. Not yet. I will...go now. You continue with your breakfast mother." While talking to her I realised that Bhavani was already gone. So I walked towards the door..

"Sure, I will see you at the luncheon." Mother reminded.

I smiled as I was happy that she has recovered from her bad health now and soon she will be back to her normal living way.

.

I went downstairs and tried to secretly notice where was Avni but I couldn't see her anywhere. While Bhavani was arranging the breakfast plates on the dinning table, I slowly walked towards the table and casually asked. "Why are you doing alone? You need help?"
