When Alexis's alarm sounded, it was still dark as ink outside. She yawned and pulled the blankets off her. Her feet touched the cool floor, and retracted on instinct.

She didn't want to leave her bed, the only place where people couldn't see her. Alexis leaned over and reached for her phone. Zero emails. Also meant zero excuses to stay in bed.

Alexis slowly got up and put on her gold slippers. She threw open the doors of her walk-in-closet and stepped in to choose her own outfit for the school day. After 3 minutes of combating herself, she just grabbed something off the shelf and started to change out of her sweaty pajamas.

She checked her phone for the weather report, and decided to wear a black rain jacket as well, because there was a chance of rain. She threw on jeans and a red T- shirt, and left to go eat breakfast and brush her teeth. When she reached downstairs, she couldn't find her dad.

He probably left early, Alexis thought. Her eyes scanned the room for a note, and sure enough, she found one taped to the refrigerator.

Good morning, Alexis. I have gone to work early this morning, and I want to wish a good first day of school. Remember, I won't be back until midnight, so just go to sleep and don't wait for me to come home. Love you, and don't do anything naughty. With Lots of love, your dad

Alexis sighed and stuffed the note in her pocket. She looked around the kitchen to see if her father left her anything already prepared to eat.

Nothing. He probably had takeout for breakfast, maybe Dunkin Donuts, like usual.Alexis thought. Alexis threw open the refrigerator door. She peeked inside, looking for ingredients for cooking breakfast. Instead, she found nothing. No milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt.

She quickly walked to the pantry room, which held the items that didn't need to be refrigerated. In the pantry she only found flour and cereal.

Nothing that didn't involve refrigerated items for preparation. Alexis groaned in frustration. I just need to get school breakfast. Alexis thought, breathing in her 1,2,3 method.

Alexis just grabbed her backpack, already full with the items needed for school, and placed it in her mudroom. With her time she would have used eating for, she just scrolled through her phone, playing games and watching videos that appealed to her.

Finally, the alarm on her smartwatch went off, indicating it was time to go to school. She threw her backpack over her shoulder and walked to her bus stop, also known as her driveway.

Her father had made a huge protest, with a petition and everything, despite Alexis's protests, so that the buses had to pick every kid up in the driveway. Alexis felt bad because she thought that the bus drivers had a hard enough job, picking up and tolerating hundreds of kids.

Her dad had explained that sometimes the weather was bad and he didn't think it was good for kids to be walking to a bus stop in fog, rain, heat, and cold. Though this explanation made sense, she knew her dad enough to know that this wasn't the only reason.

She knew her dad thought that if everyone knew that she had a lot of money, that she would be respected. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Every kid in Brently Middle School shot her dirty looks whenever she got on the bus, thinking that she was boasting.

And sure enough, the first day of school was no different. The second she got on the bus, she caught girls and boys, even the new ones, with their mouths scowling, and their eyes screaming " Show- off!"
