School continued, and classes swept by. Alexis's routines remained the same, and one week had already passed since the first day of school. Larissa continued her ravenous sassiness, and Mrs. Dolon too continued looking at her coldly, almost wickedly.

But Alexis had learned to ignore it. Her feelings and emotions continued to be held captive in the cage of her self control. Her father took advantage of her time in school, and was always gone.

She hadn't seen him in three days, but she wasn't worried in the slightest. It went from Monday to Tuesday, and from Tuesday to Wednesday. The timeline continued along that pattern, but Alexis had been snatched from that orbit years ago.

The clocks ticked, marking the beginning and end of each new day. If she had survived one week of school, she could surely survive the rest. She began her normal day, with a healthy breakfast and a frustrating walk to school.

The meaness came later, Larissa and Ms. Dolon did not bother to at least attempt to show that they didn't like her. Alexis remained patient with Larissa... until one day at lunch.

Alexis, as usual, sat alone, at a table on the corner. She wasn't on her phone, but instead was reading. As her mouth chewed food, her hands flipped pages, she felt a little bit at peace. Nobody had attempted to sit with her today, which had to be the best part.

She was so distracted, in fact, that she didn't notice Larissa sashaying to her table, along with her cronies. " Hey!" Larissa droned. Alexis ignored her. Larissa's eyebrows rose.

She subtly tapped her friends' shoulder and pointed at Alexis. Then, with a smug grin, she snatched the book from Alexis' hands. Alexis's eyes slitted.

" May I please have my book back?" She asked, her voice remaining sweet. These were the first words she had spoken in over three years.

" You are a sorry excuse for a human. Why are you all alone? Net me guess, no friends?" Larissa said, her large hands on her hips.

" You guessed correctly. But at least I don't have to threaten people to be my friend." Alexis smarted. Larissa's hands clenched.

Her eyes fell on the book in her hands. Alexis spoke quickly. " I wouldn't do that if I were you. It belongs to the library. '' Larissa's eyes gleamed.

She was having a kick at this, the only one in the school to be able to make her talk. " Well, " Larissa pretended to think. And then she ripped a page from the book.

" Oops!" She squeaked. And then she ripped another page. And then another. Alexis fingers pressed against the wood of the table. " Stop." She said, in a quiet, unforceful voice.

Larissa continued her abuse of the book. Her lemmings picked up all the pages, and crumbed them in their hands.

Alexis felt something enlighten in her chest every time she saw a page lose its life. " Stop." she said, less like a suggestion, more like an order.

Larissa started to laugh, while her hands began to rip two at a time. " Stop!" She screamed, her rage flooding her voice and emotions. Larissa cackled.

That cackle would be the last human sound that was to come out of her mouth.

Alexis' raging fire poured outside her body, and she watched as the crumbled pages of her book lit on fire on the cronies' hands.

It took them a minute to notice the fire, and when the heat dragged their eyes down to see the flaming pages, they dropped the pieces of paper in alarm. They screamed and attempted to defuse the fire by stomping as hard as they could on the paper.

The fire only got bigger.

Alexis gasped at the finishing pain of the flames escaping her. She looked up as their shoes were on fire, and they looked at Larissa, their eyes flaring in panic and fear. Larissa backed away, her eyes leaving Alexis's.

But before either girl could flee, another fire burned in the book in Larissa's hands. Then, as if following a command, the fires started their paths heading to Larissa.

The thought struck Alexis that these fires weren't normal. Larissa also reached this revelation because she looked at Alexis with thunderous eyes. " You! You monster!" A scream followed the accusation.

Alexis looked at her hands in horror. She frantically looked around for a fire alarm, but a swarm of children began to run to the exits, blocking her sight.

Larissa and her friend's screams got louder, and they started to sound less humane by every second that passed. Alexis prayed in hurry that the fire would stop at the girls, and not harm everyone else.

She observed the flickering of the fire, it was on it's way dying.

" Your mother was right to run away!" Larissa screeched.

The fire flared up again in response.

The fire spread, unable to be contained. It caught on every material, and snaked through the cafeteria, wiping out of the door. Alexis guessed that very soon, the entire school would be on fire. And she was trapped.

Alexis shut off her mind and looked for a way out of the cafeteria. The fire surrounded her. She ran to the right, attempting to escape through the small path that wasn't aflame.

Alexis ran, thanking her mother for having placed her in track when she was four. But she wasn't fast enough. She was in the middle of the fire wall, unable to stop, when the fire attempted to join together. Alexis watched the fire get nearer to her. Twenty feet. Fifteen. Thirteen. Nine.

Just as Alexis felt the fire inches from her skin, it stopped. The fire refused to go any further. It backed away, and separated, making almost a... path.

Alexis gasped. She began to walk, and the fire wisped into nothing whenever she stepped forward. She breathed in anticipation and wonder. It was a sick wonder, she knew, but still the fire surprised her. She was pretty sure that fire didn't behave this way. Not naturally.

Alexis tiptoed, almost glided, across the cafeteria floor, attempting to make her way to the exit. But the way out was simple. The fire didn't get in her way. So, as the screaming of her classmates reached her ears, she walked away.

A sudden calm at facing the fire calmed her, and the flames began to die. Before opening the door that led to the courtyard, she looked back.

She couldn't explain how the words and actions came to mind, but without thinking, she extended her hand toward the fire, clenched her fist, and uttered in a commanding voice, " Stop."

The flames died instantly. But, Alexis didn't want to see her burned classmates. So she ran.
