"Alex, Alex, wake up right now. I messed up. Bad."
"What." He groaned and rolled over, away from the frantic Luke.
"I told my dad— everything. Like everything."
"You dumba—. Is he, like, mad?"
"I think so. We should go. We can stay at Bobby's for the night. Alex, I can't stay here tonight."
"But I just got comfortable."
"Come on," Luke tugged Alex's arm until he was half off the bed.
"Okay, okay." So they climbed out the window and made the risky jump down to the grass below. They ran off to Alex's house and retrieved the beat up old car Alex had gotten. They drove to Bobby's house, thinking they would return to the Patterson's the very next morning.
But they never did. Luke never went back home. He was going to. "Someday," he'd say. But he waited too long, and never got the chance to see his mother waiting for him in the living room window. He never got to his sweet-faced father smile as he rambled about school. He died before he could ever have that again.
We all make mistakes, but Luke's was more than one could ever bare. He was just fifteen when he ran off. He stayed in the shadows for two years. And that night under the old Orpheum lights were his last.
Maybe he would have faced his mother the next morning if he had any idea what was coming.
Or maybe he wouldn't.
There is only one ending to this story. A very tragic one.
