A ringing phone startled Alex in the dead of night. It was just him and Talia huddled under one very small and ripped blanket struggling to stay warm.
"Why... is someone calling?" Talia rolled over and looked in the direction of the still ringing phone.
"I don't know. Go back to bed." He paced over to it, not truly wanting to pick it up. It was Luke, he knew that without ever picking it up.
"Hello?"
"Hey." The soft voice that eased every muscle in Alex called out to him.
"Why are you calling? You woke T."
"Because I have something for us. But we have to go now. I'll be there in ten, get ready."
Luke hung up and left Alex standing there questioning everything.
Alex grabbed a small bag and filled it with things he thought he might need in the company of Luke Patterson.
"Tal, you know where everything is and how to work it. Lock the door, stay low. If mom and dad come back-."
"Go to bobby's."
"See, you got it. I'll be back soon." He kissed her forehead and soon she was back to her peaceful sleep.
Luke's old car sputtered into the driveway and stopped in front of the door. Luke didn't stop the car or even get out. Alex just got in silently and waited for Luke to explain.
"I know this is weird. We've been weird lately. I'm trying to fix it but I only can if you want it."
"Just drive."
