Chapter eight: A toss to the ace

“Sweet those cats won’t stand a chance against our quick attacks,” Hinata said after he spiked the set my brother sent him.  I then saw Daichi talking to the male I assumed was Asahi who was trying to run away from Daichi who was yelling to not run away. I watched them with my head tilted as Ashai was trying to step over the wall when the opening was right next to him.

I turned to see them trying another spike. My brother asked me to throw the ball up again where he could set it to Hinata and it was another successful quick spike. Soon everyone joined us for practice and it went as normal well as normal as this team can be during a water break. I noticed as well as Tanaka that Nishinoya had many bruises.

“Hey, noya what kind of training were you doing while you were suspended.”

“I focus on blocked ball retrieval so the ball doesn’t hit the floor if it blocks, I haven't gotten down perfect yet but if I manage to get really good at it then you spiker won’t have to worry you can just spike.”

“noya how are you such a badass all the time.” Tanaka was crying I went to my bag and retrieved some arnica balm something Tobio and I used a lot when we were kids and bruised a lot. I returned to where they were and called out “Nishinoya-senpai here.”

“huh?” he took the little jar I handed to him “it will help your bruises and swelling it’s called arnica balm or just bruising balm if it's easier to say”  he looked at me with sparkling eyes

“um, what is it?” I asked a little confused “you're an angel sent from above” “um” I just walked away as he was talking about angels and the caring underclassmen he had. When I had reached my brother Takeda-sensei called for attention and introducing us to Ukai who was going to be our coach as today “wow are you serious we have a new coach.”

“just until after the game with Nekoma.” “huh" Tanaka yelled “hey isn’t that the grumpy guy from the sakanoshita shop, he’s coaching us,” Takeda said he used to go to this school and is the grandson of the famous coach Ukai Hinata asked why he’s store called sakanoshita shop and not ukai while accidentally calling him dude and then sir “it's the name from my mom side of the family.”   

“ Anyway, let's not waste any more time. I set up a game for you guys at 6:30 so come on let's see what you’ve got there going to be here soon” ''huh? Who?” Daichi asked

"The karasuno Neighborhood association team. '' They went back to practicing and the new coach was trying to call someone. Yamaguchi messed up a receive and a ball rolled towards the door where a male in his twenties in a dark purple and white sweatsuit stopped the volleyball from rolling out the door. He picked it up and tossed it back to Yamaguchi. He had 3 other people come in behind him all in sweatsuits saying this takes them back  “um hi.” Yamaguchi said looking confused.

“were the karasuno neighborhood association team let's do this” coach ukai thank them for coming out on such short notice. “Alright, you boys ready to play or what?” “yeah!” “here we go.”

“huh, what's with you are you sick.”

“oh sorry, he’s not ready to play yet.”  Daichi stepped in answering for nishinoya “why not he’s injured or something what's wrong?” “no, it’s not that straight forward” “so he’s not going to participant well whatever it is you can play with us if you want to our libero been pretty tied up with work stuff.” “Do you want to?”

nishinoya didn’t answer but walked away when Hinata called out “hey! It’s Asahi! Hey,” I looked over to see Hinata holding on to the bar and looking out the window “you gotta be kidding late on the coach's first day what position do you play”

“w wing spiker”  Asahi stuttered out.

“Whatever I don’t care we need more players get your ass in there and warm up chop chop man bun”

“now are we need now it a setter I would do it but I should watch the game. Hey do me a favor and let me borrow one of your setters?” coach ukai looked at Tobio and Sugawara “Suga if you're doing this for me are you because if the only way I can rise up the ranks come at your expense the I’m not doing it.” Suga replied with “you know what when you joined the club I knew I had to fight you for the setter position but it was kind of relief the setter the attack axis for the team. The setter has to be composed and steadfast but I was too nervous to put the ball in the right spot. After what happened to Asahi I was so scared my tosses to the spiker would be blocked again so I was contempt to hide in Kageyama shadow it was easier just the thought of a spike getting shut down again terrifies me but please let me set to you one more time?" okay.I’m playing on their side and I’m not losing.” “and me neither”

Suga walked to nishinoya saying  "give some of your famous receives.” “oh you know it” he smiles at nishinoya they got in their positions. I was standing beside the scoreboard helping Kiyoko keep score. Right of the bat, the score was tied 1-1 but Suga's team took the lead with a spike “Suga's killing it” Hinata yelled.

“of course he is he’s our official setter after all,” Daichi said. 

“Hey, nice going suga” nishinoya complimented him. “thanks but I didn’t do anything special it’s only because they're adjusting their whole dynamic to fit my playstyle these guys are veterans. My setting still needs quite a bit of work still we have to start playing hardball and get a good handle on those fast attacks if we don’t the game will rely on one player like last time”

“you know you actually kinda cool,” nishinoya said, “wow really coming from you is a huge compliment.” “huh, why is that?” Suga laughed, rubbing the back of his head. The next point went to Tobio's team with a quick spike from Hinata shocking a lot of people Takeda was making faces behind coach ukai who was shocked the faces he was making were quite funny so I covered my mouth to keep from laughing.

it was Hinata's turn to serve now Asahi was saying he still wanted to break through the wall “and that’s all that matters that all I needed to hear from you Asahi”  nishinoya said. Hinata's serve barely getting it over the net but was received by the male with glasses and set by one in the back letting Asahi spike the ball.

 “stop him”  “yeah I don’t take orders from you” “come on man we’re playing for keeps,” Tobio, Tsukishima, Tanaka all said getting ready to block Asahi Tobio sent it back over the net but it was saved by noya with a one-handed receive just before it hit the ground “great job noya,” Tanaka said crying tsukishima looked gross-out and confused “even if the ball rebound of their wall I will keep it in play so please you have to ask the setter for another toss Asahi your the ace” Asahi called for the ball another time “why would you encourage them to do that you know we have to block him” “obviously it meaningless if we just let him threw” Asahi spike right threw tsukishima and Kageyama who was just talking about having to block him
