Chapter twelve: rival

Tobio set to Hinata again but it was too high, Daichi saved it sending it back over the net “nice job cover Daichi” nishinoya called out they managed to block Nekoma’s Tanaka but the rally continued and Yamamoto went over the three-way block.

Ukai was explaining the difference between a Kageyama and Hinata quick attack and a normal attack. Kenma served and Hinata panicked while receiving it, getting hit instead and Nishinoya covered and allowed Tanaka to spike it, earning a point.

Tanaka and Nishinoya started to celebrate. Daichi called out to Hinata “Kageyama said not to tense up remember, keep your eyes open” “yes sir” Hinata got a one-touch from the number 7 spike.

Hinata ran to the other side of the court, beaten number 7 and earning a point. The match continued and was picking up intensity. The score was now 15-18 Nekoma in the lead now Kuro stood in front of Hinata now “you know inoka is almost 8 inches taller than you and you're still giving them a run for their money not too bad small fry.”

“who you calling small fry, small fry” Kageyama grabs Hinata and was whispering to him. They successfully did another of their normal quick attacks. I was standing off to the side with Nishinoya water bottle in my hands. It was Hinata's turn to serve Nekoma use a three-person diversion for a back-row attack Hinata again got hit in the face I facepalmed as Kuro called out “chance ball” he also spiked the ball earning a point now it was a race to see who got to 20 first.

Right now the score was 16-19 Kuro again successfully spike using a delayed spike coach nekomata was laughing at coach ukai. Takeda-sensei noticed that with kuroo in the front their attack proficiency increases.”

“that true but look at it like this half our starting lineup is made of first years you might consider us a number 1 team and Nekoma a good 10-20 levels higher” Takeda then made a metaphor about an adult cat and a baby bird.

“they have a perfect balanced defense and offense so we can’t compete at least not yet so that means all we can do is persistence so use full power and don’t let up” “so you want us to be beat them into submission” Tanaka said looking way too happy while Hinata said that made us sound like the bad guys.

Coach ukai laughed asking “what's wrong with being the bad guy were be like the crows perched on the gates of hell” “stop that coach your freaking me out” I laughed softly “our attacks and receives may be sloppy but we’re going to make this happen these are the weapons we have right now so let's use them and do the best you can bombard with all the artillery we have” with that we caught up with the score 20-22 but a time out was called.

I handed our guys their water bottles. After the break, we were one point away from tying the score but with another setter dump from Kenma Nekoma was one point away from winning the second set. The score was 23-24 if we score one more it's a deuce which means one of us would need to score two consecutive points but Kenma managed to save it after a receive that went in the net nishinoya and Hinata went after it but was seconded to late.

Hinata asked for another match and Nekomata agreed with it and so another game began. They had a total of 7 games Nekoma winning every time 23-24, 22-25, 23-25, 22-25, 24-26, 25-27, 30-32.  Everyone but Hinata seemed exhausted. Nekomata was confused and shocked by all of Hinata's energy.

“Give a break ginger if they stay any later there, going to miss the last train” the  Nekoma boys circled around us as coach ukai congratulated them and gave reviews about their play style. We were then waiting for nekomata to finish talking to our boys and soon they were cleaning the gym. I watched my brother stare holes through Kenma mumbling a lot of questions. Kenma ran away from him.

I couldn't help but laugh at him and Hinata and Nekoma number 7 jumping around making sounds and complimenting each other. I was standing next to suga and the Nekoma libero named Yaku who was asking why our libero was staring at him noya then came up and complimented his receives.

“our team ace is pretty strong I’ve never seen anyone actually receives spikes from him before your team has amazing receiving skills and a lot of that is because of your talent as a libero so well done but I won’t lose next time count on in” he then ran off not letting Yaku respond.

“un sorry he kind of intense” suga apologized  while yaku said, “he’s dangerous he got a lot of skills as a libero too but he doesn't let himself get any rest he just keeps looking up and moving forward so he’s a threat."

We were all outside watching Yamamoto and Tanaka cry while shaking hands and Kuro and Daichi trying to crush each other's hands as well as coach ukai and Nekoma assistant coach. I waved bye to Kenma from beside my brother as they headed towards the train station to return home. We were sitting talking about how the inter-high was coming up.
