Y/n sat down and crossed her legs, while Matsuda was sitting across from you on a gray couch with the rest of the task force scattered around the room. Matsuda was drinking steaming hot coffee from a tall white mug, and he slid another cup over to you with a large smile.
"Thank you," y/n said reflecting a smile back at him.
You gazed down at the tall stack of papers sat in front of you, and sat them on top of your lap scanning through every page. Y/n was extremely focused at the moment almost completely ignoring everything else that seemed to be happening. That's what always happened whenever she got lost in reading crime reports, y/n never liked to admit that she found analyzing crime reports so exciting.
The sound of a pencil hitting the ground echoed around the room which made y/n snap out of her trance and shoot her head up. As she did y/n eyes met with L's, and she quickly turned her head the opposite direction in nervousness. How long was he staring at me, she chuckled to herself, as a light shade of pink tinted the top of her ears which was hidden by y/n's h/c hair.
L's POV:
I sat at my computer looking into the many monitors covering my desk and stacked 5 sugar cubes one by one on the tip of my spoon. I turned my chair around to see y/n receiving coffee from Matsuda, she gave him a small smile and picked up a stack of papers sitting in front of herself. Her expression quickly became focused with a hint of joy and that's when I realized what she was reading; crime reports. I knew y/n would never admit that she found such a thing so intriguing, but I could honestly care less, I've done much weirder, and she never thought anything of it. To think of it y/n always found my weird habits extraordinarily interesting, I could talk to her about why I sit the way I do for hours and she would listen. If I'm being honest watching her so focused was quite cute.
I stared at her features for a few seconds when I saw the large purple eyebags resting beneath her eyes. She always badgered me about how I didn't sleep, yet she never got enough sleep herself.
The faint sound of a pencil hitting the ground broke y/n's focus, she looked up at me, and quickly turned her head away once our eyes met.
Flashback:
At sixteen years old y/n and L parted ways for a year due to being preoccupied solving highly dangerous crime cases. Y/n contacted L one day hoping to meet up. Even though you preferred to be alone almost 24/7 you couldn't shake the feeling that you were lonely, and L was the only person y/n could imagine herself being around at the moment.
~~~
The day was nice being only 76 degrees outside, and the sound of y/n and L's footsteps echoed around the park. It was fall and you and L were surrounded by tall trees with yellow and red colored leaves, it was a beautiful sight.
Y/n then caught sight of a chess table sitting on the far end of the park. It made her think back to all the times she and L had played chess together at Wammy's House, and the one time where she had beaten L at chess, y/n would never forget that. Even when she lost all those times against him y/n always came back for more, she was extremely competitive, and hated losing.
"Oi, look over there," she motioned to the chess table.
"Hm?" L hummed, lifting his head to where she was pointing.
"It's a chess table, remember that time I beat you?" Y/n boasted elbowing his side, "Come on let's play!"
"Ah yes how could I forget?" He teased lifting his thumb to his bottom lip.
L trailed behind you as you were already making your way towards the table wondering if you could beat him a second time. Y/n sat down on a wooden folding chair and L took a seat across from you.
"White or black?" he asked fiddling with a black pawn.
"White, I suppose."
L slide all of the white chess pieces across the board, and the two of you set up your pieces accordingly. Once you finished, you leaned back into your chair outstretching your arms, and intertwined your fingers cracking your knuckles all at once.
"I haven't played in a while, so I might be a little rusty," y/n explained, trying to make it seem as though L had the upper hand. L nodded and y/n made the first move using a pawn. During the game she made sure to ask L how certain pieces moved, still attempting to make him think he had an advantage.
A major mistake most people made with chess is forgetting that it's not just moving pieces on a board and thinking ahead. The things you say and do can have a major impact on the game as well, and both L and y/n were very aware of that. Small comments can really mess with the opponents mind, but of course that only worked on people who didn't know what to look for, not L. Y/n had to be a lot more cautious with the things she said or else L would know what she was doing. The two of them were on equal footing because y/n wasn't the only one who was being careful.
Y/n was so focused on what plays to make, she didn't realize that L had been staring at her for the past three minutes. "Alright your turn," she announced finally making a move.
L picked up a bishop and moved it on the chess table, once he placed it down L looked up at y/n. He stared at her facial features, and expression while she decided her next move, never once did he look away. L became distracted by her determination, and as much as he hated to admit it her beauty too.
The game went on and on, L being distracted left an opening for y/n to take advantage of and she was able to win the game. By that time it was beginning to get a little dark, and you could see the sun disappearing into a hill in the distance.
"What a game, I can't believe you let me beat you."
"I didn't let you beat me, your win was well deserved. I suppose now your never going to let me live this down?" L questioned her.
"Of course not, your going to have to remember it for the rest of your life," y/n laughed.
In the corner of his eye L noticed a man, in his mid 20's walking toward y/n and himself. He made his way toward y/n and tapped her on the shoulder, she immediately shot up not knowing who had just touched her.
"Um excuse me, I just wanted to say that your really beautiful, and was wondering if I could get your number?" He asked.
Y/n looked at him for a minute wondering where all this guys nerve came from. The man asked for her number in front of another guy she was with, for all he knew L could have been her boyfriend, and he looked much too old for a 16 year old. She also noticed that he wasn't the most attractive person, and she could already tell his personality sucked ass. "Um no thanks," she said awkwardly giving him a fake smile.
"Why, is he your boyfriend?" the man asked pointing at L, and started getting a little pushy.
"No, and I said no thanks," y/n stated.
Offended by being rejected the man rolled his eyes and walked away. L stayed siting across from y/n with his knees close to his face processing everything that just unfolded. L couldn't help but feel a little jealous even if he knew y/n would never accept the mans number. He looked at the sun seeing that it was almost dark, and turned toward y/n.
"We should head back now, it's getting dark."
"Yeah, your right."
Flashback end:
Author's note: There is a reason as to why L was using the black chess pieces, but I won't tell you guys, I wanna hear your guesses. Also maybe a lil foreshadowing??? Also y/n and L are the same age in this fanfic.
