On Thursday, May 10, 2001, Andrea Carmichael was having the time of her life. It was her fourth wedding anniversary. She was nine months pregnant. Her baby was due any day. But for now, it was just her, her husband Edward, and their daughter Sarah against the world.
That morning started out amazing. Andrea had woken to breakfast in bed made by Edward and rambunctious 18 month-old Sarah. When she saw little Sarah come in with oatmeal bits sticking to her shirt, she realized something. She had never been any happier than she was in this exact moment.
Edward greeted his beautiful wife with a kiss and Sarah ran and jumped on her mom with a loud "DINK-AWA!" Andrea looked at her husband with confusion. He just smiled and shrugged his shoulders. She started laughing. Next thing she knew, Edward was laughing too.
A few minutes after the laughter died down, Andrea finally started eating her delicious breakfast. But she would never be able to finish it. For in that exact moment, Andrea felt a pain that she had only experienced once before. She doubled over in pain. she looked over at her husband and said two words, "She's coming."
Edward panicked. He called his mother and told her to meet them at the hospital to get Sarah, as he was buckling her in her car seat. He rushed back into the house and helped is wife get into the car. He sped to the nearest hospital which was five miles away. When they got there his mother, Linda, was already waiting at the entrance. He ran and unbuckled his daughter and held her in his arm as he skillfully helped Andrea out of the car with the other. Edward hastily passed Sarah to his mother and placed a quick kiss on her cheek and thanked her for coming so fast. He then rushed his wife inside.
When Andrea was safely in the room with the nurse, Edward finally caught his breath. Then the nurse came out after about 10 minutes. She walked over to Edward and said that she had given Andrea some numbing shots to help her deal with the pain until the doctor arrived. She said that he was okay to go in and see her now. He thanked her and speed walked to the room anxious to see Andrea and comfort her. When he walked in, he looked at Andrea and felt so many emotions at once. He walked over to her and knelt down beside her. Edward chuckled and whispered in her ear, "Some anniversary present, huh?"
An hour later, the doctor still had not come. Andrea was getting worse. The baby wanted to meet the world. Another twenty minutes later, at 2:15 PM, they couldn't wait anymore. The doctor still wasn't there yet. The nurse was scrambling to get everything in order. Eight minutes went by. The nurse looked at Andrea. "Okay give me one more big push honey!" Andrea pushed with the last of all her energy. She cried as she heard the cry of her new baby girl. The nurse handed the baby to Andrea. She looked at the little, helpless baby girl in her arms and whispered in the baby's ear, "Welcome to the world, Sandra Kay Carmichael."
