Over the next few days, Roxas keeps himself occupied by looking through the book Sora lent him. It's all pictures and no words, just like he prefers, and it takes him the better part of a few hours to fully absorb all the illustrations. Even after he finishes, he finds himself reading over it again and again with a content smile.
When he has hunting to do, he remembers to put the book somewhere dry to protect it. He climbs all the way up the beach and stashes it in the branches of a bush. It never stays there for long, because as soon as he's finished, Roxas's returning to look it over again. Sometimes Hermod teases him and says that if he keeps playing with human toys and acting like a human, he'll turn into one.
The thought makes Roxas laugh, but...
Wouldn't that be something? To become human just by acting like one? The idea always makes him laugh before settling back into reading with a sigh.
He sees Sora every once in a while over those few days. The human is busy catching up on cataloging and documenting if the same mer came back this year--adding new children to family lines. He sits in the shallows with Marakihaus families as little ones are introduced to him, laughing as he shakes their hands. Sometimes, Sora will shoot a glance his way and wave with a friendly smile. Roxas always returns it with a short wave of his own, glad to feel noticed for once and not because he's an unwanted oddity.
It's been nearly a year since he last saw Sora, but he doesn't look like he's changed at all. From his toes to his hairstyle. It all looks the same like he hasn't aged a day. And that's not all that hasn't changed.
Sora still cares so deeply for the well-being of the pods. Extending the docks, fixing up the recovery tanks, and that bold declaration to protect them all from poachers. The memory of the latter has Roxas snorting out laughter. Such a classic Sora thing to do, saying that he'll defend the pods like he's some kind of soldier. He can't even hold his breath for fifteen minutes like the Marakihaus can.
Still, the sentiment is nice, and it fills Roxas with pride to know that Sora is his friend.
He wonders what Sora will be studying this year. Roxas again? Maybe he'll want to run those same tests. Measuring his body and drawing his blood. Or will he want to study something or someone else? The thought makes Roxas frown, but he's not sure why.
Is there a way to encourage Sora to keep studying him?
He wants Sora to keep sharing books and music with him. To keep practicing his Aquan with Roxas, now that he can finally appreciate how hard Sora is working on learning. He wants to keep whistling to get Sora's attention and make him laugh when he signs out that he's as slow as a sea slug. They can share meals, and joke, and have fun surfing, just like they did last year.
More than anything, Roxas wants this feeling of elation never to change.
⛎Hey, Roxas,⛎ a voice calls out above him. Roxas snaps his head up to look and smirks when he finds that it's Sora. ⛎Still reading that? You are not done yet?⛎
