Sora couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day for his birthday. The sun is high with clouds spotting the bright blue sky. The breeze isn't too strong, and the waves are so steady, the Highwind just cuts through the water like it's made of butter. The good vibes are infectious, spreading from every person aboard to those following the ship in the water.
💧The atolls again, right?💧Aqua asks as she steers the ship.
♏Right. It's where the Marakihaus like doing their hunting most,♏ Riku tells her. ♏It's safer than hunting in open water since they're such a small pod.♏
♓Maybe one day they'll get bigger, you know?♓ Kairi suggests. ♓At the rate they're accepting rogue mer, they'll probably end up with a couple Rusalkas by next year.♓
♈Wouldn't that be amazing, Sora? ♈Remus calls out over his shoulder and doesn't get an answer. ♈Sora?♈
Sora is staring out into the open sea. It's such a big place, and they know so little about it. Hell, they know more about the surface of the moon than all the things hiding in the depths of the ocean. Not him personally. Sora knows dick all about the moon and space, but that doesn't change how he wishes he knew more about the frontier beneath their hull.
♈Sora? Earth to numbskull...♈
⛎Hmm? Sorry? I was... daydreaming,⛎ Sora admits with a sheepish shrug.
♈Ah, you're allowed to daydream, especially on a day like this,♈ Remus says, giving him a friendly squeeze around the shoulder. ♈I went over the fishing contest rules with you already, right?♈
⛎Yeah, at dinner last night and breakfast this morning.⛎Sora rolled his eyes with a smile. ⛎I got this.⛎
The rules have changed this year.
The Marakihaus want to mix things up and make it more challenging this year. Last time, they won by a windfall so there was no competition at all. Humans versus mer was always going to end in a win for those with fins. Everyone agrees.
So the new arrangement is human-mer teams. It balances out the unfair advantage by giving each group a handicap in the form of a member of a different race. Instead of two teams, it's going to be four so no one can take it easy. Best duo to bring in the most fish by weight are the new kings of the reef.
Sora has no problems with those rules at all. It's the team lineup that's giving him pause.
Riku is paired with Hermod. And Strelitzia with Remus. Both humans can speak Aquan pretty well, and it makes communication easier since those two Marakihaus aren't as good at English as the others. Kairi gets situated with Skuld since the little human absolutely sucks at speaking any language that isn't her native one, and out of the four mer, Skuld's English is the best. Which leaves Sora with Roxas.
